Book excerpt: Library of America’s authoritative Fitzgerald edition continues with his greatest masterpiece and best story collection of stories in newly edited texts This long-awaited second volume of Library of America’s authoritative edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald features the author’s acknowledged masterpiece and most popular book, The Great Gatsby. It was Gatsby that solidified his reputation as the chronicler of the Jazz Age and established him as one of the leading American novelists of his generation. Perhaps no other novel of the twentieth century makes a greater claim to being our Great American Novel—for its poetic prose, its exploration of the broad, intertwined themes of money, class, and American optimism (Daisy Buchanan’s voice is “full of money”), its dominance of high school and college curricula, and its claims upon the public imagination. The novel is presented in a newly edited text, correcting numerous errors and restoring Fitzgerald’s preferred American spellings. Also included in this volume are Fitzgerald’s third collection of stories, All the Sad Young Men, which includes some of the author’s best short fiction—"Winter Dreams,” “The Rich Boy,” and “Absolution”—as well as a generous selection of stories and nonfiction from the period 1920–1926, all in newly corrected texts.

The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald's third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. Being acclaimed by generations of readers, the story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan remains one of the most famous Fitzgerald's works. It is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s. All the Sad Young Men is a wonderful short-story collection. It contains two of the most famous tales: the beautifully elegiac «The Rich Boy» and «Winter Dreams», dealing with wealthy protagonists as they come to terms with lost love and «Absolution», a boy’s confession to a priest.

Book excerpt: This third collection of Fitzgerald's extremely popular short stories was published in 1926, in the wake of his most famous novel, The Great Gatsby. Though his novels have become enduring classics, in his own time F. Scott Fitzgerald was primarily famous as a gifted and prolific writer of short stories, which were regularly published in the most popular periodicals of the day. This third collection of his tales, All the Sad Young Men, contains some of his most admired stories, including "Absolution," "The Rich Boy," and the haunting "Winter Dreams." These stories riff on the same themes that animated his great novels, and together they produce a scintillating portrait of America at the height of the Jazz Age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the Sad Young Men F. Scott Fitzgerald The Third Collection of Short Stories All the Sad Young Men is the third collection of short stories written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published by Scribners in February 1926. Fitzgerald wrote the stories at a time of disillusionment. He was in financial difficulty, he believed his wife Zelda was romantically involved with another man, she had suffered a series of physical illnesses, and his play The Vegetable had been a failure. Upon publication—and somewhat belying the notion that Fitzgerald's most famous novel had not been enthusiastically received—the New York Times wrote, "The publication of this volume of short stories might easily have been an anti-climax after the perfection and success of 'The Great Gatsby' of last Spring. A novel so widely praised — by people whose recognition counts — is stiff competition. It is even something of a problem for a reviewer to find new and different words to properly grace the occasion. It must be said that the collection as a whole is not sustained to the high excellence of 'The Great Gatsby,' but it has stories of fine insight and finished craft." Ironically, in a letter nine months earlier, Fitzgerald had advised his editor Max Perkins against publicizing the book through the newspaper. "Rather not use advertising appropriation in Times—people who read Times Book Review won't be interested in me."

Book excerpt: Carol Milford grows up in a mid-sized town in Minnesota before moving to Chicago for college. After her education, during which she’s exposed to big-city life and culture, she moves to Minneapolis to work as a librarian. She soon meets Will Kennicott, a small-town doctor, and the two get married and move to Gopher Prairie, Kennicott’s home town. Carol, inspired by big-city ideas, soon begins chafing at the seeming quaintness and even backwardness of the townsfolk, and their conservative, self-satisfied way of life. She struggles to try to reform the town in her image, while finding meaning in the seeming cultural desert she’s found herself in and in her increasingly cold marriage. Gopher Prairie is a detailed, satirical take on small-town American life, modeled after Sauk Centre, the town in which Lewis himself grew up. The town is fully realized, with generations of inhabitants interacting in a complex web of village society. Its bitingly satirical portrayal made Main Street highly acclaimed by its contemporaries, though many thought the satirical take was perhaps a bit too dark and hopeless. The book’s celebration and condemnation of small town life make it a candidate for the title of the Great American Novel. Main Street was awarded the 1921 Pulitzer Prize, but the decision was overturned by the prize’s Board of Trustees and awarded instead to Edith Wharton for The Age of Innocence. When Lewis went on to win the 1926 Pulitzer for Arrowsmith, he declined it—with the New York Times reporting that he did so because he was still angry at the Pulitzers for being denied the prize for Main Street. Despite the book’s snub at the Pulitzers, Lewis went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, with Main Street being cited as one of the reasons for his win.
