Book excerpt: Dust storms are considered natural hazards, which affect ecosystems for a short interval of time ranging from a few hours to a few days. Due to the significant impact of dust outbreaks on climate, human health and ecosystems, numerous studies have been conducted throughout the world with differing instrumentation and techniques focusing on the investigation about such events. This book provides a short review on the recent knowledge about the dust aerosol optical and physico-chemical properties, the seasonal variability of dust outbreaks, the dust source regions, and the main results of similar studies. This book also presents two dust storm spring seasonal prediction models. The algorithm of the first one is similar to a weather forecast scheme, and the second one is a multivariable regression model. Furthermore, nearly every year, usually during March to May, the Korean Peninsula has experienced several Asian Dust storm events. Analytical results for three different sample sets related to Asian dust storm phenomena are discussed here. In addition, the meteorological condition is one of the determinative factors for the dust storm occurrence. The authors of this book examine the effectiveness and application of a meteorological descriptor quantifying the daily dust storm happening probability, which is referred to as the dust storm occurrence probability index (DSOPI). The dust-related climate in North China and its prediction by statistical modelling and an Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM) for climate are addressed as well since they may contribute to forecasting dust storms.

The book provides a comprehensive treatment of the wide spectrum of FOD with numerous cost, management, and wildlife considerations. Management control for the debris begins at the aircraft design phase, and the book includes numerical analyses for estimating damage caused by strikes. The book explores aircraft operation in adverse weather conditions and inanimate FOD management programs for airports, airlines, airframe, and engine manufacturers. It focuses on the sources of FOD, the categories of damage caused by FOD, and both the direct and indirect costs caused by FOD. In addition, the book provides management plans for wildlife, including positive and passive methods. The book will interest aviation industry personnel, aircraft transport and ground operators, aircraft pilots, and aerospace or aviation engineers. Readers will learn to manage FOD to guarantee air traffic safety with minimum costs to airlines and airports.

Book excerpt: Vulnerability Analysis for Transportation Networks provides an integrated framework for understanding and addressing how transportation networks across all modes perform when parts of the network fail or are substantially degraded, such as extreme weather events, natural disasters, road crashes, congestion incidents or road repair. The book reviews the range of existing approaches to network vulnerability and identifies the application of each approach, illustrating them with case studies from around the world. The book covers the dimensions of time (hours, days, weeks, months and years), spatial coverage (national networks, regional areas, metropolitan and urbanized areas) and modes (road, urban public transport and national railway systems). It shows how the provided framework can be used to indicate the most suitable accessibility tools and metrics for a particular application. Vulnerability Analysis for Transportation Networks is for academics and researchers in transportation networks and for practicing professionals involved in the planning and management of transportation networks and services. Presents the most current, complete and integrated account of transport network vulnerability analysis Includes numerous case studies from around the world Compares alternative approaches to vulnerability analysis for multiple modes and the applicability of each Shows how academic transport network planning and management research development can be applied to actual practice, with special focus on socio-economic and environmental impacts
