Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical examination is an essential element in the assessment of functional status and location of pain in the shoulder joint. The examination is always performed with the patient’s shoulder region bare.It is advisable to use a goniometer when measuring the joint mobility.Clinical tests are fairly reliable in diagnosing e.g. rotator cuff disorders and in excluding extensive rotator cuff tears that require emergency operation .X-ray is the first-line instrumental investigation in a patient with shoulder pain. If the clinical presentation is such that surgery is considered, ultrasonography may be used to confirm a rotator cuff tear .If needed, the more costly contrast-enhanced MRI scan can be used to yield a more accurate picture of the shoulder. An extensive rotator cuff tear has to be operated on within a few weeks from the injury in order to guarantee a good result.

As such, learning to perform this exam thoroughly is of utmost importance to medical students, residents and interns on an orthopedic rotation and in later practice. This practical text succinctly presents all of the necessary information regarding the physical examination of the upper extremity. The hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder are discussed in dedicated thematic sections, with each section comprised of three main chapters. The initial chapter describes the musculoskeletal anatomy and function of the joint, presenting the tests themselves along with the rationale for performing them. The second chapter presents the systematic examinations carried out in every case, and the third chapter describes examinations for specific conditions relating to the joint, including tendinopathies, osteoarthritis, neurological conditions, deformities, and more. Plentiful bullet points and color images throughout the text describe and illustrate each test and physical sign. Convenient and user-friendly, Handbook of Upper Extremity Examination is a valuable, portable guide to this all-important diagnostic tool for students and practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: The extended role physiotherapy has been given increased attention over the past decade in North America and Europe. New models of care with expanded scope of practice for allied health professionals have emerged to respond to a continuous increase in the cost of health care and physician and surgeon shortages, especially in settings that provide services to patients with musculoskeletal disorders in rural areas. This text book provides detailed information on history, etiology, clinical findings, and most importantly imaging characteristics of major conditions of the shoulder joint, which clinicians often face in the clinic. At present, there are no books that have incorporated the shoulder joint's different pathologies for extended role therapists, physician assistants, or family physicians in one place. This book facilitates practical learning for busy clinicians who wish to improve their expertise without having to read multiple books on the subject. The first nine chapters of the book incorporate the historical perspective of the common shoulder conditions with details on the pioneers who first introduced the pathology in the medical journals. The clinical and imaging hallmarks of each disorder then follow the historical perspective section to assist with identifying the pathology and selecting the best management. Chapters 10-12 provide detailed information on indications and contraindications for different modes of procedural imaging and the specific presentation of common shoulder pathologies on plain radiographs. Written by the experts in the field, Clinical and Radiological Examination of the Shoulder Joint is a valuable resource for advanced level physiotherapists, family medicine physicians, and specialized physician assistants.

The Shoulder Made Easy conveys clear, easily understood information to help practitioners in day-to-day clinical practice as well as in preparation for undergraduate or postgraduate exams. The book focuses on: Commonly encountered clinical symptoms of the shoulder: patients don't present with a clinical diagnosis but with symptoms such as pain, stiffness, weakness or instability and a thorough consideration of what could be accounting for such symptoms and how such symptoms may be dealt with is presented. Commonly encountered clinical disorders of the shoulder: each clinical disorder is concisely presented with the background, clinical symptoms, investigations, differential diagnosis, treatment and a further reading section. This book attempts to present information in an easily read, succinct way. In particular, this book tries to unpick and explain those concepts of shoulder disorders that may be difficult to understand. An attempt is made to pass on knowledge but more importantly also stimulate lateral thinking.
