Book excerpt: Little known to the outside world, Somaliland has much to offer the truly intrepid traveller. This pioneering guidebook introduces one of the world's least chartered travel destinations. Author Philip Briggs covers everything from the low-key capital Hargeisa and mediaeval port of Berbera to peerless rock art sites such as Las Geel, and the scenery and wildlife of the Daallo Escarpment, towering 2,000m high above the pristine reefs of the Gulf of Aden. Somaliland's ruined cities and historical ports date back 5,000 years and have links with ancient Egypt and Axum in northern Ethiopia, as well as the Ottoman and British Empires. This guide offers background and practical information to every accessible corner of the country with the only real maps in existence of its capital and other large towns, and a section on wildlife.

Book excerpt: For a long time now it has been common understanding that Africa played only a marginal role in the First World War. Its reduced theatre of operations appeared irrelevant to the strategic balance of the major powers. This volume is a contribution to the growing body of historical literature that explores the global and social history of the First World War. It questions the supposedly marginal role of Africa during the Great War with a special focus on Northeast Africa. In fact, between 1911 and 1924 a series of influential political and social upheavals took place in the vast expanse between Tripoli and Addis Ababa. The First World War was to profoundly change the local balance of power. This volume consists of fifteen chapters divided into three sections. The essays examine the social, political and operational course of the war and assess its consequences in a region straddling Africa and the Middle East. The relationship between local events and global processes is explored, together with the regional protagonists and their agency. Contrary to the myth still prevailing, the First World War did have both immediate and long-term effects on the region. This book highlights some of the significant aspects associated with it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pictorial exploration of the stunningly beautiful yet little-visited Horn of Africa: erupting volcanoes and lava lakes, sulphur pools, sheer-sided mountains, almost inaccessible monasteries and welcoming people. The Horn of Africa is perhaps not the first destination that comes to mind for a holiday. Its appeal lies in the unknown. Few will ever visit the region for a real holiday, but those adventurous souls who do will find lively people, exotic landscapes, nature's raw power on display and enough to satisfy the most enquiring of travellers. The rewards for the curious are astounding. Djibouti remains a little corner of France surrounded by heat of all kinds. Eritrea is an enigma, an indecipherable puzzle, a blend of friendly people, undisturbed wildlife, evocative antiquities, prehistoric art and stunning scenery. Ethiopia has pulled itself out of the quagmire and famine of the mid-1980s. The sights of Ethiopia are amazingly varied, both natural and man-made. Somaliland is so off the map that it does not officially exist. A visit to many parts of these countries is an adventure off the edge of the world as we know it, beyond the boundaries of the perceived planet. Within the pages of this book the reader will find inspiration and perhaps more questions than answers!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borders offer opportunities as well as restrictions, and in the Horn of Africa they are used as economic, political, identity and status resources by borderland peoples. State borders are more than barriers. They structure social, economic and political spaces and as such provide opportunities as well as obstacles for the communities straddling both sides of the border. This book deals with the conduits and opportunities of state borders in the Horn of Africa, and investigates how the people living there exploit state borders through various strategies. Using a micro level perspective, the case studies, which includethe Horn and Eastern Africa, particularly the borders of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, focus on opportunities, highlight the agency of the borderlanders, and acknowledge the permeabilitybut consequentiality of the borders.
