Book excerpt: The one and only chameleon is world renowned for its ability to change its skin color rapidly (throughout movement of pigment cells) and for the outrageous length of its tongue (more than one and a half times its body length!). Relatives of agamids and iguanas, chameleons are insect-eating, tree climbing reptiles that have highly specialized needs. Written by a team of experienced herp experts, Chameleons intends to instruct keepers on how to best care for their chameleons and covers the four most commonly kept species: Jackson's chameleon with its prized triceratops horns on its head, panther chameleon with its spectacular coloration, veiled chameleon with its unusual casque on its head, and the rather large Parson's chameleon. The book subsequently is divided into four parts, each including an introduction and natural history, captive care, and reproduction of the species. Part I, Jackson's Chameleon was written by Sean McKeown; Part II, Panther Chameleon by Gary Ferguson, James B. Murphy, Achille Raselimanana, and Jean-Baptiste Ramanamanjato; Part III, Veiled Chameleon and Part IV, Parson's Chameleon by Kenneth Kalisch. References and index included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piers Anthony’s bestselling Xanth series is one of the cornerstones of fantasy, a lively and whimsical interpretation of a genre often criticized for taking itself too seriously. Anthony’s first Xanth novel, A Spell for Chameleon, was initially edited to target a more traditional audience. Now, in an eBook exclusive, A Spell for Chameleon has been reworked line by line—its language matching the simpler, playful way with words that made Piers Anthony an enduring fan favorite. Xanth is an enchanted land where magic rules, a land of centaurs and dragons and basilisks where every citizen has a unique spell to call their own. For Bink of North Village, however, Xanth is no fairy tale. He alone has no magic. And unless he gets some—and fast!—he will be exiled. Forever. But the Good Magician Humfrey is convinced that Bink does indeed have magic. In fact, both Beauregard the genie and the magic wall chart insist that Bink has magic as powerful as any possessed by the King, the Good Magician Humfrey, or even the Evil Magician Trent. Be that as it may, no one can fathom the nature of Bink’s very special magic. This is even worse than having no magic at all . . . and he still faces exile!

It provides an understanding of the way these creatures live in the wild and explains how you can mimic these conditions at home in order to provide a habitat that your chameleon will thrive in for many years to come. There is a lot of conflicting information out there which can be confusing, what should you believe and what should you ignore? This is an all in one, go to guide, which covers all the main topics and answers any questions you may have. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a gay man living in the suburbs? Do you identify primarily as gay, or suburban, or some combination of the two? For that matter, how does anyone decide what his or her identity is? In this first-ever ethnography of American gay suburbanites, Wayne H. Brekhus demonstrates that who one is depends at least in part on where and when one is. For many urban gay men, being homosexual is key to their identity because they live, work, and socialize in almost exclusively gay circles. Brekhus calls such men "lifestylers" or peacocks. Chameleons or "commuters," on the other hand, live and work in conventional suburban settings, but lead intense gay social and sexual lives outside the suburbs. Centaurs, meanwhile, or "integrators," mix typical suburban jobs and homes with low-key gay social and sexual activities. In other words, lifestylers see homosexuality as something you are, commuters as something you do, and integrators as part of yourself. Ultimately, Brekhus shows that lifestyling, commuting, and integrating embody competing identity strategies that occur not only among gay men but across a broad range of social categories. What results, then, is an innovative work that will interest sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, and students of gay culture.

Book excerpt: The Chameleon in the Room provides practical strategies and tactics for the management of the risks that injure real businesses. Real businesses are those that produce, trade, consume or distribute physical commodities, machinery, parts and equipment or consumer products and services. It is unusual in that it provides tools specifically designed to manage those risks that are often ignored by executives; the same risks that have surprised and fatally wounded many giant enterprises, and countless SMEs. In this way it particularly addresses the concerns and responsibilities of Executive Directors, Non-Executive Directors, ‘C-Suite’ Executives and Entrepreneurs of all types and sizes of physical enterprises. In the face of rapid change and globalisation, data driven risk management methods alone are no longer adequate. The challenge to the survival of businesses and business models is greater now than it was at any time during the 19th and 20th centuries; so it is vital to reinvent risk management and be prepared to deal with 'unexpected and highly consequential' events, as well as common business risks. This text presents alternative ways to cope with the diabolical array of risks that threaten non-financial businesses; including some seldom written about to date e.g. Black Swan Event, Liquidity, External Operational, Concentration, Correlation and Lack of Flexibility Risks. The author offers ideas designed to assist in the establishment of Risk Assessment and Management processes that will protect while propelling the lasting success of a business enterprise. Noting that it has become fashionable to import many of the risk management practices invented and utilised by financial institutions into the physical business sphere, the author identifies those that do not work well in the non-financial business context, and describes appropriate alternative methods. Creating the means for a business to survive the onslaught of known and unknown risks, and thrive - thereby securing jobs in the communities where it operates - is a social and economic imperative. When adopted, the detailed and illustrated resources presented in this book will effectively buttress a business against disaster, whatever the entity’s size and maturity.
