This is the first volume to capture all the key elements in the field in one invaluable resource, providing an up-to-date and broad analysis of the use of errorless learning principles in rehabilitation after brain injury. With contributions from key researchers in the field, Errorless Learning in Neuropsychological Rehabilitation covers the historical foundations of errorless learning, current understanding of underlying mechanisms which support learning and its use in memory and language in rehabilitation as applied to particular populations across the age span. This volume also addresses questions of efficacy through analysis of research comparing errorless learning with other established learning methods and principles. Errorless Learning in Neuropsychological Rehabilitation is an essential resource for practitioners, researchers and students of psychology, neuropsychology and rehabilitation.

Book excerpt: Rehabilitation provides a core concept around which to organise support, intervention and care for people with impairments in memory and other cognitive functions. This book introduces a conceptual framework and rationale for the application of a neuropsychological rehabilitation approach for people with dementia, helping them to manage, bypass or overcome these problems and experience optimum well-being. Methods and techniques of cognitive rehabilitation are described and the process of goal-setting is discussed in detail, showing how effective strategies may be linked to form an individualised, goal-oriented approach to intervention. The application of a rehabilitation approach in real-life contexts is explored, demonstrating the role and value of neuropsychological rehabilitation within a holistic, psychotherapeutic framework of care and support. This overview of the neuropsychological rehabilitation approach to dementia care will be of great interest to psychologists as well as to those studying or practising in the area.

Book excerpt: In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest work—extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings and their major theoretical and practical contributions. This volume of self-selected papers recognises Professor Barbara A. Wilson's major contribution to the study of neuropsychology. Published over a 25-year period, the papers included here address the assessment, treatment and evaluation of rehabilitation provided to people who have memory difficulties arising from an injury or illness affecting the brain. This selection of papers includes work on errorless learning, the natural history of the development of compensatory memory systems, paging systems developed to enhance independent daily living for memory impaired people and single-case experimental designs to appraise the response of individual patients. The final section includes a practical framework for understanding compensatory behaviour, a model of cognitive rehabilitation and a discussion of the dilemmas created by the different aims of neuroscience as opposed to those of clinicians. This book will be of great interest to clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists, along with anyone who is interested in reducing the impact of memory problems on people who have suffered brain injury.

It is considered the "signature wound" of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These injuries result from a bump or blow to the head, or from external forces that cause the brain to move within the head, such as whiplash or exposure to blasts. TBI can cause an array of physical and mental health concerns and is a growing problem, particularly among soldiers and veterans because of repeated exposure to violent environments. One form of treatment for TBI is cognitive rehabilitation therapy (CRT), a patient-specific, goal-oriented approach to help patients increase their ability to process and interpret information. The Department of Defense asked the IOM to conduct a study to determine the effectiveness of CRT for treatment of TBI.
