Book excerpt: Becoming an emperor is not easy, especially when there are enemies everywhere and no one you can trust. India, third century BCE. A land ruled by powerful dynasties, each fighting for supremacy over the other, unaware that a conqueror from Greece has arrived at the country’s doorstep in a bid to establish his dominion over the entire known world. In the east, the Magadhan empire is ruled by the Nandas, a clan driven by a limitless hunger for power and given to violence and abuse. From the embers of their lust and avarice a boy is born – a boy named Moriya, raised by a tribe of peacock-tamers and oblivious of the legacy that is rightfully his...until the day he is sought out by Chanakya, a wily political strategist looking for vengeance against the ruthless rulers of Magadha. Under the training and tutelage of his shrewd adviser, the tentative young man, now christened Chandragupta, makes his way across the vast plains of Bharatvarsha to meet the famed invader Alexander and build an army of his own. But being a warrior prince, he finds, comes at a heavy price – of trust and loyalty and perhaps even his life... This is the story of a youth who must battle supreme odds – both within and without – to fulfil his destiny as one of the greatest emperors the world has ever known. This is the story of Chandragupta Maurya.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive work dealing with the life and times of India's first historical emperor, and a picture of the civilization of India in the early period of the fourth century BC. The author while enlightening on the origin and early life, conquests and chronology, administration, ideals, divisions, presents the reader in the court of the first historical emperor of India, duly attended by his popular ministers and officers and acquaints the student with the rules of service and administrative departments. Land system and rural administration are surveyed along with the municipal administration of the times. Justice personified in the King appears before us along with the huge divisions of the army to maintain it. Social and economic conditions have been so elaborately discussed as to cause surprise and curiosity. As a matter of fact, the author takes the reader back to the golden times as if by magic. To render the matter easily accessible to the reader an Index of subjects, an Index of Technical Terms, three Appendices and a plate of typical Mauryan coins, have also been added. This work is meant to fill up a gap in the knowledge of Ancient India.

Book excerpt: We take it for granted that some historical figures become heroes, and others do not. Chandragupta Maurya evolved from obscure ruler to contemporary national icon. The key moment in the making of this Indian hero was a meeting by the banks of the River Indus between Chandragupta and Seleucus, founder of the Seleucid empire and one of Alexander the Great’s generals, in c.305-3 BC. This significant event was a moment of peace-making at the end of conflict. But no reliable account exists in early sources, and it is not even clear which ruler was victorious in battle. This uncertainty enabled British and Indian historians of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to interpret the sources in radically different ways. With Chandragupta representing India and Seleucus standing in for Britain, British scholars argued that Seleucus defeated Chandragupta, while Indian academics contended the opposite. The writing and reception of history fundamentally influences how we engage with the past, and the evolving colonial and post-colonial relationship between Britain and India is crucial here. In India, the image of Chandragupta as an idealised hero who vanquished the foreign invader has prevailed and found expression in contemporary popular culture. In plays, films, television series, comic books and historical novels, Chandragupta is the powerful and virtuous Hindu ruler par excellence. The path to this elevated standing is charted in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kautilya, also known as Chanakya, is India s most illustrious political economist of all time. He regarded economic activity as the driving force behind the functioning of any political dispensation. In fact, he went to the extent of saying that revenue should take priority over the army because sustaining the army was possible out of a well-managed revenue system.Kautilya advocated limiting the taxation power of the State, having low rates of taxation, maintaining a gradual increase in taxation and most importantly devising a tax structure that ensured compliance. He strongly encouraged foreign trade, basing it on the premise that for a successful trade contract to be established, it had to be beneficial to all. He emphasised State control and investment in land, water and mining. Kautilya was a true statesman who bridged the gap between experience and vision. For Kautilya, good governance was paramount. He suggested built-in checks and balances in systems and procedures for the containment of malpractices. Many postulates of Kautilya s philosophy of political economy are applicable to contemporary times.

Book excerpt: This historical play on Chandragupta, who ushered a new Golden Period in the history of India in the modern era (after a sequence of glorious eras including those of Rama in the Treta-Yuga (cosmic era) and Krishna (Dwapar-Yuga), millennia ago, who are now venerated as Avatars (Incarnations of God) by virtue of their exemplary characters and deeds.) It draws from information contained in history books, a play in Hindi by the famed poet and playwright, Jaya Shankar Prasad, the recent television series called Chanakya, and other available sources; and is written in a fashion to facilitate stage-production by youngsters and adults, particularly those of Indian descent in the USA, Europe, and other parts of the world.

The first emperor, Chandragupta Maurya, grew up in a village of peacock farmers. His grandson Ashoka would renounce war and strive for peace. Indians still call him Ashoka the Great and regard him as one of history’s finest rulers. The Maurya Empire was ruled by kings who allowed their ministers to disagree with them. It existed over two thousand years ago, yet it had laws familiar in the 21st century—protecting workers, buyers and sellers. Today its monuments survive while its symbols adorn the flag of India.

Book excerpt: The present work describes the material and moral progress which India had achieved during the paramount sovereignty of the Gupta emperors in the fourth and fifth centuries a.d. It traces the origin and rise of the ruling family to Srigupta (240-280 a.d.) and concludes with the reign of Kumaragupta III (543 a.d.). It discusses the spirit of the age and the various trends in the sphere of Religion, Economy, Society, Education, Administration, Art and Architecture. It seeks to bring together all the facts and data derivable from different sources--literary, epigraphic and numismatic, the accounts of foreign visitors, particularly of the Chinese pilgrim Fa-hien who has left a detached and valuable record of India`s civilization during the reign of Chandragupta II. Herein we get an accurate picture of India`s golden age, the growth of her various institutions, her activities of expansion, colonization and her intercourse with Indonesia, China and other countries. The work is divided into sixteen chapters. It has an index of proper names and an addenda on the hoard of new Imperial Gupta coins discovered at Bayana in Bharatpur. The work is very interesting and instructive and is designed to meet the requirements of the academic student of history and the general reader alike.
