Book excerpt: Given the uncertainties in future food and nutrition security due to climate change compounded with an increasing global population, sustainable development is essential for the survival of much of the world's population. Besides the conceptual evolution of food and nutrition security, exploration of new scientific areas aids in reshaping our knowledge of nutritional requirements, and innovation of novel technologies can be utilized to tackle production and security issues in sustainable ways. Emerging Solutions in Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security provides comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the current problems and issues, emerging ideas, and pragmatic solutions in sustainable nutrition. The book is designed to promote an understanding of the fundamentals and changing landscapes of food systems, nutrition, and environmental sustainability. Emerging issues such as the growing importance of traditional foods in improving nutrition security, the exploration of biodiversity to promote food diversity, the sustainable management of current agroecosystems, the progress made in utilizing biotechnology to enhance crop production, the utilization of bio-fortification and food fortification as means of nutritional management, the latest research advancements in mineral research, and the functional foods are comprehensively addressed. For researchers seeking a deeper insight into sustainable nutrition security and the current technical developments, these chapters cover current technologies across the four pillars of food security, food availability, food accessibility, food utilization, and food stability, and provide a platform for critical scientific thinking in the field of food security, safety, and environmental sustainability in conjunction with Sustainable Development Goals such as Zero Hunger and Climate Action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Research Council's Science and Technology for Sustainability Program hosted two workshops in 2011 addressing the sustainability challenges associated with food security for all. The first workshop, Measuring Food Insecurity and Assessing the Sustainability of Global Food Systems, explored the availability and quality of commonly used indicators for food security and malnutrition; poverty; and natural resources and agricultural productivity. It was organized around the three broad dimensions of sustainable food security: (1) availability, (2) access, and (3) utilization. The workshop reviewed the existing data to encourage action and identify knowledge gaps. The second workshop, Exploring Sustainable Solutions for Increasing Global Food Supplies, focused specifically on assuring the availability of adequate food supplies. How can food production be increased to meet the needs of a population expected to reach over 9 billion by 2050? Workshop objectives included identifying the major challenges and opportunities associated with achieving sustainable food security and identifying needed policy, science, and governance interventions. Workshop participants discussed long term natural resource constraints, specifically water, land and forests, soils, biodiversity and fisheries. They also examined the role of knowledge, technology, modern production practices, and infrastructure in supporting expanded agricultural production and the significant risks to future productivity posed by climate change. This is a report of two workshops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the challenges and impacts of poor diets and nutrition from current food systems and the potential contribution of biodiversity and ecosystem services in addressing these problems. There is a strong need for a multi-level, cross-sectoral approach that connects food biodiversity conservation and sustainable use to address critical problems in our current food systems, including malnutrition. Building on research from the Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition Project (BFN), which aims to better link biodiversity, diets and nutrition, the book presents a multi-country, cross-sectoral analysis of initiatives that have promoted local food biodiversity in four countries: Brazil, Kenya, Turkey and Sri Lanka. This book offers a comprehensive summary of the BFN Project results in each of the four countries along with lessons learned and how this work could be upscaled or applied in other regions. It argues that the strategic promotion and use of food biodiversity is critical in uniting attempts to address conservation, nutrition and livelihood concerns. The book is structured around chapters and case studies encompassing the BFN Project with specific experiences related by partners who played key roles in the work being done in each country. By offering a comparative view capable of furthering dialogue between the respective countries, it is also meant to connect the individual cases for a “greater than the sum of its parts” effect. This means consideration of how localized activities can be adapted to more countries and regions. Therefore, the book addresses global issues with a foot planted firmly in the grounded case study locations. This book will be of great interest to policymakers, practitioners and NGOs working on food and nutrition, as well as students and scholars of agriculture, food systems and sustainable development.

Book excerpt: Food production and consumption processes are largely governed via control mechanisms that affect food accessibility and environmental efficiency. Food resource marginalization, inequality, and deleterious consumption urgently require new governance and developmental systems that will provide food security and create consumption patterns that protect the natural environment and food resources. Global Food Politics and Approaches to Sustainable Consumption: Emerging Research and Opportunities is an essential reference source that discusses the challenges and solutions of food security and consumption control. Food politics can be linked to persistent challenges of inequitable access, food resource inefficiency, and control and consumption, which form part of the local development realities that can address global sustainable development. While highlighting topics such as rural agriculture, capitalism, and food chain management, this publication is ideally designed for policymakers, sustainable developers, politicians, ecologists, environmentalists, corporate executives, farmers, and academicians seeking current research on the policies and modalities of food efficiency and equality.
