Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pathology of Mind Being: Third Edition of the Second Part of the Physiology and Pathology of Mind, Recast, Enlarged, and Rewritten The same reason will, I trust, be held sufficient to justify the large amount of new and in some regards disputable matter which is included in the chapters on the Causation and Pre vention of Insanity. It seemed proper to emphasise the fact that insanity is really a social phenomenon, and to insist that it cannot, be investigated satisfactorily and apprehended rightly except it be studied from a social point of View. In that way only, I believe, can its real nature and meaning as an aberrant phenomenon be perceived and understood. In recasting the plan of the work I have thought it right therefore, in the chapter on Causation, first to treat generally of the etiology of mental derangement from a social standpoint, so fulfilling the requirements of its organic relations, so to speak, in the social organism; and, secondly, to treat particularly of its patho logical causation, so connecting it with the general pathology of nervous disease, and answering the requirements of scientific pathology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Pathology and Therapeutics Several of the most recent writers on insanity have been so well pleased with the first edition of my book that they have assumed into their writings not only the ideas and doctrines, the arrangement and ex ample scontained in it, but have even taken, without restraint, as their own, simple excerpts of whole sections. I quietly permitted this to 00 cur, but now it would, of course, be dimble to me if any one were to think that it was I who, in this edition, had borrowed from those authors. I would therefore beg of the reader, wherever doctrines, pages, and even chapters, occur similar, or nearly similar, to what they may shortly before have read in books or journals, simply to compare them with the first edition of this work which appeared in 1845. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pathology of Mind a Study of Its Distempers, Deformities, and Disorders The first edition of The Physiology and Pathology of fifimi appeared in 1867, and a second edition in the following year. In 1876 the first part of it was published as a separate volume entitled The Physiology of Mind, and in 187 9 the second part followed in separate form as The Pathology of Mind. This book, although retaining the old name, is virtually new; for while old matter has been left out and much fresh matter added, the whole has been recast, the form of its presentation changed, and the text entirely rewritten. As it would not have been proper to give it a new title, since it deals with the same subject as the former treatise, and necessarily incorporates the revised substance of what was contained in it, I have retained the old title, only adding a supplementary notification of the present scope of the contents. As it is now, the work may be said to present the last ripe fruits of observations and reflections the first green fruits of which appeared so long ago.
