The term has a variety of meanings in different sociocultural and political contexts, including “self-strength, control, self-power, self-reliance, own choice, life of dignity in accordance with one’s values, capable of fighting for one’s rights, independence, own decision making, being free, awakening, and capability” (The World Bank, 2002, p. 10). However, the World Bank report observed that most definitions focus on issues of “gaining power and control over decisions and resources that determine the quality of one’s life” (p. 10). This interpretation of empowerment provides a useful starting point for the development of the series of interconnected arguments explored here. Establishment of the basis for understanding, identifying and developing strategies through education necessary for individuals to be able to make choices that inf- ence the quality of their lives is the main aim of this book. There are a number of assumptions and boundaries that frame this analysis. First, the book focuses on “agents”; however, empowerment is often conceptualised in terms of relationships between agency and structure (e. g. , Alsop, Bertelsen, & H- land, 2006). Agency could be defined as “an actor’s or group’s ability to make purposeful choices – that is, the actor is able to envisage and purposively choose options” (p. 11).

Book excerpt: Reimagining Digital Learning for Sustainable Development is a comprehensive playbook for education leaders, policy makers, and other key stakeholders leading the modernization of learning and development in their institutions as they build a high value knowledge economy and prepare learners for jobs that don't yet exist. Currently, nearly every aspect of human activity, including the ways we absorb and apply learning, is influenced by disruptive digital technologies. The jobs available today are no longer predicators of future employment, and current and future workforce members will need to augment their competencies through a lifetime of continuous upskilling and reskilling to meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This book features curated insights and real-world cases from thought leaders throughout the world and identifies major shifts in content formats, pedagogic approaches, technology frameworks, user and design experiences, and learner roles and expectations that will reshape our institutions, including those in emerging economies. The agile, lean, and cost-effective strategies proposed here will function in scalable and flexible bandwidth environments, enabling education leaders and practitioners to transform brick-and-mortar learning organizations into digital and blended ecosystems and to achieve the United Nation’s ambitious Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Book excerpt: To address the grand challenges of the 21st century, societies must undergo substantial transformations. Whether the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), set in place by the United Nations as targets to be reached by 2030, can be reached will depend in part on how successfully education strategies empower learners of all ages with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to transform themselves, their communities, and their societies. Educational institutions have critical roles to play in facilitating and supporting these transitions. To fulfill this vision and be transformational, however, education and educational institutions themselves will have to be transformed. Digitalization, New Media, and Education for Sustainable Development explores how digitalization and new media are already shaping and will shape the transformation of international educational systems. It examines all aspects related to and interconnections between digitalization, new media, and education for sustainable development. Covering topics such as biased design, energy smart schools, and project-based learning, this premier reference source is an indispensable resource for educators and administrators of both K-12 and higher education, preservice teachers, teacher educators, government officials, policymakers, community leaders, researchers, and academicians.
