Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2011 NZ Post Children's Book Awards, Young Adult Fiction category, this powerful post-apocalyptic drama is a sequel to the award-winning novel The Sea-wreck Stranger. 'No matter how much you might want to leave a place, if it's where you were raised it holds a piece of you it doesn't easily give up.' Ness is looking out to sea, waiting for the arrival of Dev. It's been two years since the two set out in a dinghy, escaping the wrath of the Islanders of Dunnett; two years since their shrivelled and sun-battered bodies were coaxed back to health by Dev's people. Ness's new home, the city of Vidya, is in ruins; the air is unsafe, and the buildings scarred by fire. Towers loom empty and hollow. The community of Vidya is bravely building a new society and Ness yearns to find a place where she might belong. Sent to work on the home farms, Ness becomes caught up in surprise attacks and ongoing land battles. Working tirelessly in the medic room at Ebony Hill, she helps mend the wounded and worse, and suffers much hardship. Questioning the treatment of prisoners and witnessing the realities of war challenges Ness's commitment to this brave new society. Will she find a place for herself here? A stunning sequel to The Sea-wreck Stranger, Ebony Hill is a gripping and suspenseful novel. It's packed with a standout cast of characters and explores not only the harshness of war but the resilience of the human spirit.

A year on from the aggressive attacks against them, the farming community at Ebony Hill still shows the cracks. When it becomes clear the paramilitaries aren't about to give up, hard decisions must be made. Can our heroine, Ness, risk going back to the Island of Dunnett, the home she narrowly escaped? If she does, what will she find? How will she deal with the legacy of her defection and the scars it has left on those she loves? Following Ness's attempts to make whole the tangled threads of her heart, this is a haunting exploration about belonging and the stark and unsettling reality of ambition and greed. A sequel to Ebony Hill, which was shortlisted for the 2010 NZ Post Children's Book Awards and CLF Notable Book of 2010.

Book excerpt: The Corydiidae (Polyphagidae, sensu lato) is a family of extremo-phile cockroaches that have received little taxonomic attention. Their cryptic subterranean way of life in some of the most in-hospitable parts of the planet makes the study of this group particularly difficult. Arenivaga (Rehn) is a genus of Corydiid cock-roach endemic to the American Southwest, Florida, and Mexico. This unusual group of insects, not examined in nearly a century, is revised in this volume. This work includes redescriptions of the genus and its nine known species, descriptions of 39 new species, a key to the adult males, and distribution maps for each species. A photographic series of the habitus and detailed drawing of the genitalia of each species are also provided, and novel morphological characters are described. In addition, the locality data of more than 5000 specimens used in this study is now available to researchers. Even though this research increases the number of species in Arenivaga five-fold, there is little doubt that there are many more species to be found in Mexico, which is poorly surveyed in comparison to the US terrain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Daughters of Dunn House 1953 is a collection of first-person accounts from seven octogenarians who reflect upon overviews of their lives from 1953 to the present, lifelong friendships made at Dunn House dorm, and the exciting careers generated by the opportunity to participate in the Ford Foundation Early Entrant Program at Fisk University without having first finished high school. Stories should appeal to all ages, for topics range from pertinent historical eras, family genealogy, educational and personal experiences from childhood and adult levels, glimpses of undergraduate HBCUs in action versus several graduate institutions, explorations of places from the U.S. and abroad, to differences in character and personal problem solving. About the Author Hildred Roach, a retired professor from the University of D.C., earned music degrees from Fisk and Yale universities and did further study at the University of Ghana and the Juilliard School of Music. A pioneer of Black Music studies in the 1960s, she joined Peoples Congregational Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and was married to the late Atty. James Stafford. Her special interests are theater, genealogy, politics, comedy, and the promotion of peace and love among human beings. Co-Editor Maryann Rozzell, after graduating from Fisk University, received Certification in Physical Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania and began her career just at the end of the polio era. She later earned a Master’s degree from George Washington University. Her interest in travel and service led her to volunteer programs in eight countries and to serve locally as an Elections Officer and hospital volunteer. She has been an active member of the local Fisk Alumni Association and since retirement, has delved into the world of genealogy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines the role of journalism in reviving and reporting on sexual violence in the #MeToo related, hashtag era. Bringing together 15 journalism scholars from around the world, this book explores and offers solutions to the common issues and inadequacies of reporting on sexual violence in the media. Presenting a range of conceptual, methodological, and empirical chapters, the book tackles issues related to, or missing from, journalism in three sections: Part I acknowledges and surveys the role journalism plays in shining a light on social injustices and critiques research deficits in reporting on sexual violence; Part II employs cutting-edge research linked to an intersectional lens to amplify the voices that have been silenced in the media coverage; Part III explores how advocacy, campaign, and solutions journalism offers frameworks for ethical reporting on the shadow epidemic of sexual violence during these COVID-normal times. This timely and important work connects established and emerging journalism practices to changing discourses about sexual violence. It is an important reading for students and scholars of journalism, gender studies, media studies, communication studies, culture studies, and sociology.
