Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Times in Texas It is due to our colored citizens to say, that in depicting the character of Cudjo, I had no intention whatever to ridi cule or cast a slur upon them. I have merely attempted to describe a type of the race common amongst them in ante bellum days, and which in all probability would have been as common among any other race of people, if like them they had been for so long a time subjected to the demoral izing influences of ignorance and a degrading servitude. Now that they have been liberated by the arbitrament of the sword, and can avail themselves of all their rights as free citizens of our common country, I hope (and believe from the advances they have already made) that the time will soon come when they will place themselves upon a level with those who enjoyed all the advantages of freedom whilst they were in a state of slavery. That year he and his brother, Burr, the sons of a former governor of Florida, organized a volunteer company called the "Mustangs." Like Davy Crockett, they were fired up "to give the Texans a helping hand on the road to freedom" from Mexican rule. The first chapters of Early Times in Texas lead up to the Goliad Massacre on Palm Sunday 1836, in which Burr (referred to as Captain D?) was killed. John was luckier. After a hair-raising escape from Goliad, he wandered across the countryside, dodging the Mexicans and living by his wits.ø ø The diary that Duval kept during these exciting months was the basis for Early Times in Texas, which was published more than fifty years later, in 1892. In the intervening years he was a Ranger known as "Texas John" and later was recognized as one of Texas's first men of letters, the author of The Adventures of Big-Foot Wallace

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Liberty of Texas For the Liberty of Texas is a tale complete in itself, but it forms the first of a line of three volumes to be known under the general title of the Mexican War Series. Primarily the struggle of the Texans for freedom did not form a part of our war with Mexico, yet this struggle led up directly to the greater war to follow, and it is probably a fact that, had the people of Texas not at first accomplished their freedom, there would have been no war between the two larger republics.
