Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aviation industry is being transformed by the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones – commercially, militarily, scientifically and recreationally. National regulations have generally failed to keep pace with the expansion of the fast-growing drone industry. Aviation Law and Drones: Unmanned Aircraft and the Future of Aviation traces the development of aviation laws and regulations, explains how aviation is regulated at an international and national level, considers the interrelationship between rapidly advancing technology and legislative attempts to keep pace, and reviews existing domestic and international drone laws and issues (including safety, security, privacy and airspace issues). Against this background, the book uniquely proposes a rationale for, and key provisions of, guiding principles for the regulation of drones internationally – provisions of which could also be implemented domestically. Finally, the book examines the changing shape of our increasingly busy skies – technology beyond drones and the regulation of that technology. The world is on the edge of major disruption in aviation – drones are just the beginning. Given the almost universal interest in drones, this book will be of interest to readers worldwide, from the academic sector and beyond.

Book excerpt: How does the use of military drones affect the legal, political, and moral responsibility of different actors involved in their deployment and design? This volume offers a fresh contribution to the ethics of drone warfare by providing, for the first time, a systematic interdisciplinary discussion of different responsibility issues raised by military drones. The book discusses four main sets of questions: First, from a legal point of view, we analyse the ways in which the use of drones makes the attribution of criminal responsibility to individuals for war crimes more complicated and what adjustments may be required in international criminal law and in military practices to avoid ’responsibility gaps’ in warfare. From a moral and political perspective, the volume looks at the conditions under which the use of military drones by states is impermissible, permissible, or even obligatory and what the responsibilities of a state in the use of drones towards both its citizens and potential targets are. From a socio-technical perspective, what kind of new human machine interaction might (and should) drones bring and which new kinds of shared agency and responsibility? Finally, we ask how the use of drones changes our conception of agency and responsibility. The book will be of interest to scholars and students in (military) ethics and to those in law, politics and the military involved in the design, deployment and evaluation of military drones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to serve as a convenient reference tool that collects the laws of each state into one volume. Though many states have drone laws "on the books" today, every state will eventually have one. For years now, state legislatures have grappled with the use of drones by their citizens. Much of this has occurred in the absence of clear regulatory guidance from the FAA. States were attempting to regulate an industry that was artificially hobbled by a vague, constantly changing federal regulatory scheme. Thankfully, the federal regulations are coming into focus. The long-awaited "Part 107" regulations for small unmanned aircraft systems - or "sUAS" - went into effect on August 29, 2016. Though there are still many questions about these regulations, at least they are in effect. Until they were in place, any commercial drone activity required a special exemption from the FAA. Without the exemption, no one could legally fly. Things are different now. Today, commercial drone operators have a clear path to operating legally under the FAA regulations. This means that many new companies are going to start flying, nationwide. When more drone entrepreneurs start flying under the new federal regulations, the practical effects of state laws that have been passed over the years will become clear. Legislative ideas that looked desirable to some when the drone industry was small may begin to hurt real businesses. This will happen in every state. If the drone industry is to thrive, entrepreneurs and the attorneys that serve them must understand what laws are "out there" that may impact the industry. This book is a step in that direction

Book excerpt: This is an unmanned aircraft systems operator's logbook that was designed by a commercial pilot, flight instructor, and drone attorney because he had a need for a drone logbook. Why Do We Log Everything? Marketing. Showing a completed logbook to a potential customer is a great marketing point. Like the old adage, "A picture is worth a thousand words," a good logbook is worth a thousand flights. You can quickly demonstrate your flight experience by flipping through the pages. Furthermore, a well-kept and orderly logbook gives the impression that you are a professional. Insurance. When you apply for insurance, they will ask you to fill out a form that is going to ask for all sorts of information. A logbook will assist you in filling out the form so you can receive the most accurate quote. Going for a Certificate/Rating. Individuals can use this logbook to apply their experience towards UAS certificates / ratings. While the FAA is still working on creating certificates and ratings, you can prepare for the future by logging everything now.Why Paper? There Are All Sorts of Apps for My Mobile Devices Out There. Here are some reasons why paper is better than logging your hours electronically:* 14 C.F.R. § 61.51(i) says, "Presentation of required documents.(1) Persons must present their pilot certificate, medical certificate, logbook, or any other record required by this part for inspection upon a reasonable request by-(i) The Administrator;(ii) An authorized representative from the National Transportation Safety Board; or(iii) Any Federal, State, or local law enforcement officer. If your electronic logbook is on your device, do you really want to give law enforcement or the FAA your mobile device? Furthermore, how are you to get the data off that device? * If you are marketing to a potential client, you can scan pages of your logbook and send it to them. It is more cumbersome to get the data off a phone or website. * What happens if your phone is stolen, water damaged, battery dies, or there is poor cell phone signal? * You don't have to worry about data theft like you would with a website or an app.* Paper is the current industry standard.
