Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two hundred years before Shakespeare observed that “all the world’s a stage,” another writer with a flair for drama realized the same fact. This writer was Geoffrey Chaucer. Chaucer, however, presented his dramatic efforts through the medium of short stories, and he is regularly referred to as one of the world’s great storytellers. Yet there are certain questions which arise time and again in the minds of literary scholars. Most of the tales in the Canterbury collection are excellent, but why did Chaucer include such obviously poor recitals as the dull “Melibeus” and the lengthy “Parson’s Tale”? Did he fail to recognize their lack of literary merit? Or were those of his stories which seem so dull to modern readers really popular in fourteenth-century England? Of Sondry Folk is Lumiansky’s answer to such questions. But it is more than that. It is the revelation of Chaucer as dramatic writer. Chaucer, says Lumiansky, did not intend primarily to tell a series of good tales. Instead, he chose tales which suited his purpose of dramatic exposition of character. And the characters, though drawn from many walks of life, are not stereotypes. Their tales not only disclose what the Pilgrims think of themselves but reveal these Pilgrims as they really are—dull, romantic, egotistical, pious, or lustful. Not all readers will agree with Lumiansky’s conclusions in this book. But his scholarship, his clear, uninvolved prose, and his wit and frankness make of it an excellent handbook for the student of the Canterbury Tales. Of Sondry Folk will increase the enjoyment and understanding of Chaucer’s art for any reader, lay or scholarly.

Book excerpt: This is the first and only edition of The Canterbury Tales that presents Chaucer's poem word for word in modern spelling. It retains the inimitable charm of Chaucer's language while eliminating the obstacle of archaic spelling. This text is eminently more readable and accessible, and will encourage students to read and appreciate Chaucer, not deter them.

Book excerpt: This adaptation of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales explores the bawdy humor of The Miller's Tale, The Merchant's Tale, The Nun's Priest's Tale, and The Wife of Bath's Prologue. Prochaska infuses The Franklin's Tale with a hefty dose of comedy as the characters navigate their way through a rocky coastline and an awkward love triangle. Faithful to the original, this text is accessible to a young twenty-first century audience for whom it may be an introduction to Chaucer's wise and gentle satire on love, marriage, and sex. "CANTERBURY TALES is not centered on sex but [it] does not shy from the pilgrims' raunchiness, and...it was taken directly from Chaucer's original stories of an odd-lot of women and men headed for England's famous cathedral... Adapter Reiner Prochaska has pulled off a marvelous script, translated into modern English; he begins with Geoffrey Chaucer's strange language that was spoken in his time, long before the age of Shakespeare, when England still paid homage to Rome and the pope. No religious overtones, let me reassure readers, creep into the tales of fellow travelers who are much more concerned with life's harrows and `country matters' than God's or the Vatican's doings. In that era, they could not count on sticking around a long time and that made every day precious. And that's what Chaucer captured and playwright Prochaska affirms." Roy Meachum, The Tentacle

Book excerpt: A clear modern prose translation of Chaucer’s masterpiece of Middle English storytelling by the acclaimed poet David Wright. The Canterbury Tales has entertained readers for centuries, with its comic animal fables, moral allegories, miniature epics of courtly love, and rollicking erotic farces that bring fourteenth-century England to life on every page. The gloriously varied stories, narrated by a group of pilgrims on their way to Canterbury, are peopled with saints, sinners, and ordinary mortals in a vivid panorama of the medieval world. This prose translation renders these tales as accessible and irresistible to modern readers as they were to Chaucer’s contemporaries.
