This book was written for the millions of citizens who function normally in our society every day and are trying to understand why some people would go out and shoot totally innocent people who have absolutely no relationship at all to the shooter. It was also written for those who are fed up with society and want to strike back-those individuals who have hate in their hearts and revenge on their minds. Book excerpt: “[Jance] continues to grow in her art.... It’s no mystery why this writer is a hit.”— Seattle Times A premium edition reissue of the third electrifying Joanna Brady novel by New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance. A prisoner languishes in a Phoenix jail cell accused of slaying his estranged wife. No one believes the man is innocent, except the new female sheriff of Cochise County, in town for a crash course in police training. Joanna Brady is out of her jurisdiction—and possibly out of her league. For a human monster is on the prowl, hiding the grisly evidence of his horrific crimes in the vast emptiness of the Arizona desert. And an impromptu investigation, with no official sanction, and no back-up, is drawing a cold, ingenious serial killer much too close to Brady for comfort—and closer, worse still, to her little girl.

A contemporary classic, this “astonishing literary debut” (Margaret Atwood, bestselling author of The Handmaid’s Tale) “places Native American voices front and center” (NPR/Fresh Air). One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years Among them is Jacquie Red Feather, newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind. Dene Oxendene, pulling his life together after his uncle’s death and working at the powwow to honor his memory. Fourteen-year-old Orvil, coming to perform traditional dance for the very first time. They converge and collide on one fateful day at the Big Oakland Powwow and together this chorus of voices tells of the plight of the urban Native American—grappling with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and spirituality, with communion and sacrifice and heroism A book with “so much jangling energy and brings so much news from a distinct corner of American life that it’s a revelation” (The New York Times). It is fierce, funny, suspenseful, and impossible to put down--full of poetry and rage, exploding onto the page with urgency and force. There There is at once poignant and unflinching, utterly contemporary and truly unforgettable. Don't miss Tommy Orange's new book, Wandering Stars!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the explosive protests over police killings and the legacy of racism Following the high-profile deaths of eighteen-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and twenty-five-year-old Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland, both cities erupted in protest over the unjustified homicides of unarmed black males at the hands of police officers. These local tragedies—and the protests surrounding them—assumed national significance, igniting fierce debate about the fairness and efficacy of the American criminal justice system. Yet, outside the gaze of mainstream attention, how do local residents and protestors in Ferguson and Baltimore understand their own experiences with race, place, and policing? In Hands Up, Don’t Shoot, Jennifer Cobbina draws on in-depth interviews with nearly two hundred residents of Ferguson and Baltimore, conducted within two months of the deaths of Brown and Gray. She examines how protestors in both cities understood their experiences with the police, how those experiences influenced their perceptions of policing, what galvanized Black Lives Matter as a social movement, and how policing tactics during demonstrations influenced subsequent mobilization decisions among protesters. Ultimately, she humanizes people’s deep and abiding anger, underscoring how a movement emerged to denounce both racial biases by police and the broader economic and social system that has stacked the deck against young black civilians. Hands Up, Don’t Shoot is a remarkably current, on-the-ground assessment of the powerful, protestor-driven movement around race, justice, and policing in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a manual for Evangelical Christians who anticipate the “second coming” of Jesus Christ and understand that they may be called upon to endure some of the hardships of the End Times. It takes the genre of survival literature up a notch by addressing the moral, ethical and doctrinal questions that Christians should consider in planning for existential challenges in an uncertain future. The author doesn’t “reinvent the wheel” on common survival issues, but covers items of interest to Believers who want to develop a survival strategy that deals with the world as they find it, yet is consistent with their faith. Among these are: Does charity really “begin at home?” Is it righteous to use lethal force in defense of yourself and others? Does subscribing to the Pre-Tribulation Rapture mean that Believers need not be concerned about coping with the End Times?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America for Americans is Dobry's attempt to explain some of the basic concepts of America, things that the schools are not allowed to teach nowadays. Basic things like what is the idea of America? What makes this country unique in the history of the world? Where does money come from, and who decides how much each country gets? We hear about everyone's "Constitutional Rights," but what are they? Why would anyone in their right mind want to destroy the Constitution, the one document that guarantees our protections against a tyrannical government. What is socialism, at least today's version of it? Can socialism really work long term in America? What is the cost of socialism? What is the socialist agenda? What is the conservative agenda? These are things that all Americans need to understand well, what we have and what we stand to lose. America is at a critical point right now. What we do in the 2020 elections will not only determine what kind of life we will have, but also what kind of life our children and grandchildren and their children will have, and we need to be keenly aware of that. Will they live free, or will they live as subjects under an all-controlling government? We need to consider that very carefully because your freedom is like your life: once you give it up, you won't get it back. We all need to be well-informed with the truth before we make decisions that will have irreversible consequences for the future generations of Americans. We have the right to throw away our own freedoms if we so choose. We do not have the right to throw away theirs. And it's not just about the 2020 elections. It won't end there. The fight to keep socialist forces from taking away Americans' freedom will go on until either they win or we defeat them. There can be no compromise between freedom and slavery. It's one or the other. There is no middle ground.
