Book excerpt: A provocative and urgent essay collection that asks how we can live with hope in “an age of ecocide” Paul Kingsnorth was once an activist—an ardent environmentalist. He fought against rampant development and the depredations of a corporate world that seemed hell-bent on ignoring a looming climate crisis in its relentless pursuit of profit. But as the environmental movement began to focus on “sustainability” rather than the defense of wild places for their own sake and as global conditions worsened, he grew disenchanted with the movement that he once embraced. He gave up what he saw as the false hope that residents of the First World would ever make the kind of sacrifices that might avert the severe consequences of climate change. Full of grief and fury as well as passionate, lyrical evocations of nature and the wild, Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist gathers the wave-making essays that have charted the change in Kingsnorth’s thinking. In them he articulates a new vision that he calls “dark ecology,” which stands firmly in opposition to the belief that technology can save us, and he argues for a renewed balance between the human and nonhuman worlds. This iconoclastic, fearless, and ultimately hopeful book, which includes the much-discussed “Uncivilization” manifesto, asks hard questions about how we’ve lived and how we should live.

Book excerpt: How to make enough passive income from your properties to retire in 10 years, even if you have zero investments today Do you want to shorten your years working a 9-to-5 job and increase the years you'll spend doing what you love, while you can still do it? Traditional wisdom advises us to keep toiling, scrimping, and saving until we finally reach the retirement age of 60, after which we can live off what we've saved and hope we die before it runs out. But what if you can hustle more today so you don't have to wait until you're a senior citizen to enjoy life's freedoms? What if you can continue making money in retirement so that you can afford to leave a significant nest egg to your children? Real estate is lauded by many financial experts as a key to building wealth. It's a reliable means of beating inflation, a tangible investment that can be leveraged and can exponentially increase its value through capital appreciation. One of the best benefits of real estate is its income-producing opportunities. There are a lot of ways real estate can make you money, from flipping, rentals, and more. You can take advantage of these opportunities to build a regular pension that will provide a steady source of income -- and replace your day job -- way sooner than it would take with stock investments. If you're willing to put in the research and the leg work, retirement can come sooner rather than later by investing smartly in real estate. Get to know the fundamentals and processes involved in starting a real estate portfolio for retirement income in this handy guide to real estate investing. In Journey Towards Early Retirement Through Real Estate Investing, you will discover: How to determine exactly how much you need in order to retire (it might not be as much as you think!) How to buy your first investment property with limited funds and minimal experience The indispensable step you should never skip when selecting an investment property, which will save you time and money down the road How you can live in your property for free while easing into the world of real estate rentals How taking out a loan and paying interest can help you save money and earn a higher return on investment How you can upgrade to a bigger and more profitable property without having to pay additional taxes 5 resourceful value-adding ideas to add significant dollars to your rental income without having to shell out more money How to shorten your mortgage by as much as 13 years, while continuing to invest in more properties And much more. Nothing worthwhile will come without some effort and commitment. Even though early retirement doesn't seem like an achievable goal right now, if you're truly serious about changing your life's trajectory, you can make it happen. There will be some lifestyle changes involved, a lot of hard work to be done, and a huge amount of patience required. But in the end, all that will be worth it to live the life you've always wanted. If you are approaching the end of your working life or recently retired, you are probably anxious about your finances. How can you afford to retire, let alone enjoy your retirement in years to come? How can you ensure you won't outlive your money? Questions about retirement finances are now more urgent and worrisome than ever as the Baby Boomer generation retires in droves and economic conditions remain uncertain. Book excerpt: Pensionize Verb. 1. To convert money into income you can't outlive. 2. To create your own personal pension, a monthly income that lasts for the rest of your natural life. With the subpar performance of the markets, record-high personal debt levels, and shockingly low savings rates, it's clear that many Canadians expecting to retire in the next decade simply don't have a sufficient nest egg to ensure a worry-free retirement. Making matters worse, only about one-third of Canadians currently belong to a formal, or registered, pension plan; and even a large number of that "lucky third" will not retire with a guaranteed pension income. If you no longer have the time to wait and hope for your traditional investments to pay off, the answer is to "pensionize your nest egg" using the new technique of product allocation set out in this book. Pensionize Your Nest Egg explains how to Recognize if you really have a pension or just a tax-sheltered savings plan. Become informed about the new risks you and your nest egg face in retirement and why asset allocation, despite its value in the accumulation stage of life, is not sufficient to protect you and your money. Measure your retirement sustainability quotient (RSQ) and your Financial Legacy Value (FLV)-then choose a retirement income plan on the Retirement Income Frontier. Understand how product allocation differs from asset allocation, how to allocate your nest egg across three product silos, and learn about the new financial products that are available to protect against the new risks you face. Follow a seven-step process to close your Pension Income Gap and convert your retirement savings into a secure stream of lifetime income. Whether you do it yourself or work with a financial advisor, Pensionize Your Nest Egg gives you a simple plan to create a guaranteed retirement income-for life.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ending poverty and stabilizing climate change will be two unprecedented global achievements and two major steps toward sustainable development. But the two objectives cannot be considered in isolation: they need to be jointly tackled through an integrated strategy. This report brings together those two objectives and explores how they can more easily be achieved if considered together. It examines the potential impact of climate change and climate policies on poverty reduction. It also provides guidance on how to create a “win-win†? situation so that climate change policies contribute to poverty reduction and poverty-reduction policies contribute to climate change mitigation and resilience building. The key finding of the report is that climate change represents a significant obstacle to the sustained eradication of poverty, but future impacts on poverty are determined by policy choices: rapid, inclusive, and climate-informed development can prevent most short-term impacts whereas immediate pro-poor, emissions-reduction policies can drastically limit long-term ones.
