Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dmitry Shostakovich was one of the most successful composers of the twentieth century—a musician who adapted as no other to the unique pressures of his age. By turns vilified and feted by Stalin during the Great Purge, Shostakovich twice came close to succumbing to the whirlwind of political repression of his times and remained under political surveillance all his life, despite the many privileges and awards heaped upon him in old age. Through it all, Shostakovich showed a remarkable ability to work with, rather than against, prevailing ideological demands, and it was this quality that ensured both his survival and his musical posterity. Pauline Fairclough’s absorbing new biography offers a vivid portrait of Shostakovich. Featuring quotations from previously unpublished letters as well as rarely seen photographs, Fairclough’s book provides fresh insight into the music and life of a composer whose legacy, above all, was to have written some of the greatest and most cherished music of the last century.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the life and works of the great Russian scientist Dmitry Ivonovich Mendeleyev (1834-1907), discoverer of the Periodic Law of the Elements.Mendeleyev's work had many features that were typical of advanced Russian natural science as a whole. He possessed a breadth of vision that led him into many fields of scientific work. The main feature of Mendeleyev's work was the importance he attached to linking theoretical work with practice, with life. As an epigraph to his Foundation of Chemistry he chose the prophetic words: "What science sows the people will reap." On whatever problem he was working, all his deeds were inspired by the wish to help the development of the productive forces of his native land and to advance technique and science in Russia. He drew up a long-term program for exploiting Russias extremely rich natural resources and applying chemistry to various branches of the nations economic life. He is rightly known as the initiator of the wide application of chemistry to Russian industry and agriculture. It was Mendeleyev who conducted the first serious agrochemical research in Russia. He established the first network of agricultural experimental stations. Supervising the work of the Chamber of Weights and Measures he prepared the introduction into Russia of the metric system.

Book excerpt: Aligned to Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects, this volume helps students understand the central ideas of Mendeleyev's periodic law. Mendeleyev's major breakthrough was his arranging of the elements in sequence by atomic weight but recognizing that there were gaps where no elements had yet been discovered. This account of Medeleyev's struggling childhood in Tobolsk, Siberia, teaching in St. Petersburg, writing The Principles of Chemistry, and development of the table and how his idea was challenged by the scientific community will captivate readers and show them what it means to pursue a question significant enough to follow for a lifetime.

Book excerpt: At the age of eighty, my door to a career in medical and scientific writing was slammed shut by ageism. To keep my brain occupied, I turned to writing fiction. I didnt take creative writing courses in my youth, so I hope my shortcomings are compensated for by lessons learned in life. After my wife died of cancer, I raised my sons as a single parent. Ive met politicians, madams, prostitutes, pedophiles, FBI agents, and Russian intelligence agents. Im even acquainted with a former major general in the KGB. Ive traveled to Europe sixteen times, including three visits to Vladimir Putins hometown of Saint Petersburg. I can still speak some French and German. Ive also been to South America and North Africa. I used to be a moderately strong chess player (even Bobby Fischer tolerated my presence, which was uncommon for someone so hostile). Im fairly knowledgeable about dolphins and venomous snakes. My masters paper at Columbia University dealt with nuclear weapons testing. Since my Russian is limited to the alphabet, Im obliged to read my favorite author, Dostoevsky, in English translation. I envy the craftsmanship of James Joyce. His Dubliners should be read and reread by all aspiring fiction writers. Alas, Ill never get to his level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1920s, Dmitry Shostakovich emerged as one of the first Soviet film composers. With his first score for the silent film New Babylon (1928-29) and the many sound scores that followed, he was situated to observe and participate in the changing politics of the film industry and negotiate the role of the film composer. In The Early Film Music of Dmitry Shostakovich, author Joan Titus examines the relationship between musical narration, audience, filmmaker, and composer in six of Shostakovich's early film scores, from 1928 through 1936. Titus engages with the construct of Soviet intelligibility, the filmmaking and scoring processes, and the cultural politics of scoring Soviet film music, asking how listeners hear and see Shostakovich. The discussions of the scores are enriched by the composer's own writing on film music, along with archival materials and recently discovered musical manuscripts that illuminate the collaborative processes of the film teams, studios, and composer. The Early Film Music of Dmitry Shostakovich commingles film/media studies, musicology, and Russian studies , and is sure to be of interest to a wide audience including those in music studies, film/media scholars, and Slavicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "tandem" was used to describe the Putin-Medvedev combination which ruled Russia from 2008 to 2012, when Medvedev was president and Putin prime minister. Many people saw Putin as the real wielder of power, with Medvedev as his puppet. Others, however, saw Medvedev as a visionary, someone who envisioned large scale schemes - even though these schemes have not yet come to fruition. At the same time, many in the West regarded Medvedev favourably, and gave him credit for raising expectations among both the elite and the middle classes in Russia in such a way as to make it difficult for the Russian state to return to its old ways. This book presents a comprehensive survey of the Medvedev presidency, covering all areas including politics, the economy, international relations and social developments. The author concludes that it is still too early to assess Medvedev's achievements definitively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the presidency of Dmitry Medvedev is often seen as a continuation of Vladimir Putin’s presidency, with the same policies applied in the same way, this book disagrees, arguing that Medvedev’s foreign policy was significantly different from Putin’s. The book considers especially the relationship between Russia and the Euro-Atlantic security configuration, including both NATO and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, a relationship of great importance to Russia, given constant attention. It discusses a wide variety of issues, including "frozen conflicts", security co-operation and nuclear weapons reductions, highlights the different tone and approach under Medvedev, exemplified especially by his draft European Security Treaty, and shows how after Putin’s return to the presidency there has been a shift in foreign policy, with much great emphasis on influencing Russia’s immediate neighbours and on Eurasian union, and less emphasis on rapprochement and co-operation.
