Lewis Carroll 1865. In 2015, the first edition of Alice in Wonderland will have its 150th anniversary. The novel as well as its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There have been read by people of all ages and all origins ever since. Due to the widespread success of the literary work, Lewis Carroll s novels have not only been illustrated by hundreds of artists, but also frequently adapted for film, theatre, opera, music, and other forms of art. Among these numerous adaptations are two motion pictures produced by the Walt Disney Company, which is known for warm-hearted movies for audiences of all ages. The relationship between Alice in Wonderland and Walt Disney even dates back to 1923 when he founded the famous film studio due to a distribution contract for his first completed short film called Alice s Wonderland. This thesis, however, focuses on the Disney adaptation from 1951 a 2-D cartoon animation as well as the most recent film adaptation from 2010 a combination of live-action film and computer-generated animation. Thus, the main part of this thesis constitutes a comparative analysis of both adaptations regarding the following aspects: the evolution of the visualisations, the different characters of the heroine Alice, the influences of Walt Disney and Tim Burton on the story lines and the styles of the adaptations, and the responses to both films. Thereby, the following research questions should be answered: What are the specificities of Carroll s novels? Why did it attract so many filmmakers? Why did both adaptations employ the medium of animation? Did the medium get implemented successfully? How did Walt Disney and Tim Burton affect the story lines and the styles of the adaptations? How did the heroine s character change under their influence? How did the audiences react to the adaptations? What are the reasons for that? The first theoretical part hence starts with a description of the literary model, which aims at defining the novels specificities respectively the essence Carroll tried to convey. Chapter 2 outlines the most important issues of today s adaptation discourse, since the theory of adaptation serves as the theoretical basis for the comparative analysis. In chapter 3, an overview of the medium of animation will be given, including the medium s possibilities and challenges as well as its techniques. With [...]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when a film is remade in another national context? How do notions of translation, adaptation and localisation help us understand the cultural dynamics of these shifts, and in what ways does a transnational perspective offer us a deeper understanding of film remaking? Bringing together a range of international scholars, Transnational Film Remakes is the first edited collection to specifically focus on the phenomenon of cross-cultural remakes. Using a variety of case studies, from Hong Kong remakes of Japanese cinema to Bollywood remakes of Australian television, this book provides an analysis of cinematic remaking that moves beyond Hollywood to address the truly global nature of this phenomenon. Looking at iconic contemporary titles such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Oldboy, as well as classics like La Bete Humaine and La Chienne, this book interrogates the fluid and dynamic ways in which texts are adapted and reworked across national borders to provide a distinctive new model for understanding these global cultural borrowings.

Book excerpt: Although its early films featured racial caricatures and exclusively Caucasian heroines, Disney has, in recent years, become more multicultural in its filmic fare and its image. From Aladdin and Pocahontas to the Asian American boy Russell in Up, from the first African American princess in The Princess and the Frog to "Spanish-mode" Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 3, Disney films have come to both mirror and influence our increasingly diverse society. This essay collection gathers recent scholarship on representations of diversity in Disney and Disney/Pixar films, not only exploring race and gender, but also drawing on perspectives from newer areas of study, particularly sexuality/queer studies, critical whiteness studies, masculinity studies and disability studies. Covering a wide array of films, from Disney's early days and "Golden Age" to the Eisner era and current fare, these essays highlight the social impact and cultural significance of the entertainment giant. Book excerpt: Nearly 60 years after Lewis Carroll's literal masterpiece Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was first published, a new filmmaker named Walt Disney created a silent film about a little girl named Alice and her adventures in Cartoonland. The pilot launched a 56-episode series and led Disney down a rabbit hole to form a company that would go on to become synonymous with fairy tales-including making further versions of the Alice story with the beloved 1951 animated film, the more-recent live-action versions, and several iconic Disney Park experiences. Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland: An Illustrated History delves behind-the-scenes of those whimsical worlds.
