Book excerpt: “A genius . . . a writer who spent his life decrying the onward march of the Machine.” — The New Yorker Brave New World author Aldous Huxley on enlightenment and the "ultimate reality." In this anthology of twenty-six essays and other writings, Aldous Huxley discusses the nature of God, enlightenment, being, good and evil, religion, eternity, and the divine. Huxley consistently examined the spiritual basis of both the individual and human society, always seeking to reach an authentic and clearly defined experience of the divine. Featuring an introduction by renowned religious scholar Huston Smith, this celebration of "ultimate reality" proves relevant and prophetic in addressing the spiritual hunger so many feel today.

Book excerpt: The so-called New Atheists receive much publicity, but their demand to be provided with incontrovertible evidence for the existence of God, and that such evidence must come from a scientific examination of the physical world, is the wrong approach. As many theologians and philosophers have claimed, the search for God begins by looking inwards into oneself. But what does that mean? Surely looking inwards we find nothing but the contents of one’s own mind. Where does God come in? It is by the examination of the contents of the mind and trying to understand how they got there that one seeks clues about God’s influence on the mind. Our consciousness bears a resemblance to that Consciousness from which it is directly derived. It bears his imprint. It is from the characteristics of that imprint we get to know what kind of God we are dealing with. Only then can we be open to realizing how that other creation of his, the physical world, also bears his imprint.

Book excerpt: This book is the precipitate of a conference convened in 1997 to explore concepts of divinity as both one and many in ancient Assyria, Egypt, Greece, and Israel. The five original and provocative essays that resulted engage issues as diverse as the advantages and disadvantages of polytheism; different concepts of deity held by these closely related societies; the possibility that plural nouns may denote singular beings and vice versa; the many definitions of monotheism; and how to decide whether an ancient author in referring to a god as one was characterizing that god as numerically singular, best in quality, or simply first to appear on the cosmic stage.

Book excerpt: From my childhood I have been deeply touched by human problems. I saw that people who strictly followed their religion and faith were generally dishonest. This led me to search for the nature of God. I often wondered how people who believed in Holy Scriptures indulged in dishonesty. I also saw that something in me always made me act honestly, stand up to wrongs of others, and question the purpose of life. Gradually I perceived answers to human problems and discovered the nature of Truth (God). There arose a deep urge to put across the Truth to all people to enable them to put an end to their sufferings. This urge has resulted in the writing of this book. What is written cannot be really understood by the mind, as it is incapable of understanding the Truth. It is only the inner self that can comprehend it. However, if the reading of these pages can stir a human soul by making it question existing values (of the mind) its purpose is served. When Buddha realized the Truth he went into quietude and spoke nothing for a long while. His disciples asked him why he did not talk about the Truth that he had realized. He said, "Those who see the Truth need not be told about it, while those who do not see the Truth will not understand it." There is always a difficulty in putting across the Truth, which is given many interpretations over the ages. However, it can be perceived by 'living from within'. If the soul can be touched it will start on the journey to end problems and, when the soul becomes free, the Truth will be seen.

Book excerpt: "It is a reality that this path called the Fourth Way Work can fundamentally change the kind of person you are. What you can become is free from the tyranny of external life and of the false self. Your new developed level of understanding gives you the peace that passes understanding. Your new level of Being means you are no longer controlled by self-love and you will know what your purpose is for being born into life on this planet...The Fourth Way Work is not a religious path. It predates and transcends all religions, traditions and their practices and is always the same teaching about a human being's possible evolution through the development of consciousness as taught in the Fourth Way Work of inner purification." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, the majority of humanity has had a relationship with the Divine that is completely external. Not only has God been seen as something external and separate, but also, through that perceived distance, God has been a place to project all of the darkest parts of our collective personality. In all cultures God is called Love, yet for virtually every one of us, the image we have been fed of the Divine is actually anything but loving. God is described as wrathful, jealous, angry, and punishing, a being to be feared and obeyed. There have always been those who have had a different relationship with God, one that is subjective. Sometimes during our long history, these have been a few scattered individuals solely sharing the experience of the Divine within with anyone who was ready and willing to hear. At other times, they were lesser-known mystical adepts, existing within the confines of established religions. At other times still, whole societies at large have known this most universal of truths: that the Kingdom of Heaven is within. Over the millennia, through the myriad of experiences available on this planet, the collective consciousness of humanity has been slowly evolving. As a result of this evolution, the old ideas and projections of the Divine are beginning to undo. The understanding that eternal peace is a subjective choice is becoming more and more widespread, and more acceptable. At this time, there is an unprecedented awakening occurring for the human race. In what, in the grand scheme of things, is the blink of an omnipotent eye, people are beginning to search for teachings and tools that will allow them to take their awareness inward, beyond the surface of the mind, to a direct experience of their True Nature as Divinity itself. There is a growing sense that living a life of separation and suffering is not necessary. Many teachings have appeared to answer this awakening, some new, some ancient. Of these, some actually have the means to fulfill life’s purpose of union with God. Most do not. Like children fumbling in the dark, mankind is looking for a way to return to the light. The path of return has existed forever. The Teaching is actually clearly laid out in all traditions for those with the eyes to see. All of the greatest teachers of history taught the same thing in different ways. They all knew that eternal peace lies within the heart of every human, that separation, suffering and death are the sad dreams of the lost, sleeping children of God. This book is unique in that not only have I been able to share my experience and perspectives of the eternal dance of consciousness, but also, it has as its conclusion a direct invitation to a real Teaching, the sole purpose of which is the awakening of humanity. My hopes for this book are many. May it enliven your desire to wake up, or intensify that desire at whatever stage it is already kindled. May it answer questions you have had, whether or not you knew you had them. May it undo many of the common spiritual concepts that, no matter how beautiful, ultimately distract the aspirant from the true goal of human life. May it let you know that the path to freedom can be easy, swift, and joyful. May you, at the end of this text, have had at least a glimpse of your own magnificent potential.
