Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the solution of the problem of determining the presence of corona discharge on electrical equipment with acoustic radiation. It is shown that corona discharge leads not only to irreversible losses of electrical energy, but also interferes with the transmission of high-frequency signals, deteriorates insulating elements, can become a source of conditions for the occurrence of a destructive arc discharge and is one of the factors of changing the continuity of the electrical system as a whole. The book describes the processes in a corona discharge that lead to the occurrence of acoustic waves. The authors analyzed acoustic radiation from a corona discharge reproduced in laboratory conditions. The received acoustic signals were processed by Fourier transform. Thus, the features of the spectral function, which belong specifically to the corona discharge in electrical networks with industrial frequency current, were determined. Based on the inverse Fourier transform, a simplified model of the acoustic radiation of the corona discharge was constructed. The authors proposed a method for detecting the presence of a corona discharge based on the spectral characteristics of acoustic radiation. Techniques were developed to determine the presence of a corona discharge for the creation of stationary and mobile devices. The advantages of the method of detecting the presence of corona discharge by the acoustic spectrum are shown. The method makes it possible to determine the presence of a corona discharge remotely, even out of direct sight, regardless of the time of day and regardless of the season. The book states that determining the presence of a corona discharge is not enough, it is still necessary to determine its location. The method of finding the coordinates of the corona discharge as a source of sound was described. Methods of searching for corona discharge coordinates with a fixed scanning device and a moving scanning device are proposed. A UAV is proposed as a mobile platform for the scanning system. The influence of the Doppler effect on acoustic measurements when the UAV speed changes was taken into account. The authors have shown that the use of coronal discharge detection with UAVs will not only enable the prevention of coronal discharge, but also increase the frequency of surface inspections. This will allow timely measures to be taken to improve the reliability of the power system operation. The book is intended for the researchers, postgraduate students and students specialized in theory and calculations of electrical systems.

Book excerpt: The reliability of electrical energy networks depends on the quality and availability of their electrical equipment, e.g., power transformers. Local failures inside their insulation can lead to breakdowns resulting in high outage and penalty costs. To prevent these destructive events, power transformers are tested for partial discharge (PD) activity in a routine test before shipment. Furthermore, PD activity can be evaluated as a diagnostic measurement on-site (on-line or off-line) or be constantly monitored during service using the ultra-high frequency (UHF) method. In this thesis, a calibration procedure is proposed for the UHF method used in power transformers, which is lacking so far. The calibration process is required to ensure both reproducibility and comparability of UHF measurements. Only a calibrated UHF measurement procedure can be deemed reliable and eventually be introduced to supplement in (site-)acceptance tests of power transformers. The proposed calibration method considers two factors: The influence of the UHF sensors' sensitivity and that of the UHF instrument characteristics, including accessories like cables, pre-amplifier, etc. The UHF instruments' influence is corrected by using a defined and invariable test signal as a reference for all recording devices comparable to the calibration method used in IEC 60270 for electrical PD measurement. The sensitivity of the UHF sensor is addressed by a characterization of UHF sensors using the antenna factor (AF) measured in a special reproducible setup, i.e., a GTEM cell. In this thesis, a self-built GTEM cell is presented, which is oil-filled to address the environmental conditions inside a transformer where the sensor will be used. With such a cell, influences on the AF of UHF sensors are investigated, and it is shown that sensor sensitivities measured in an air-filled cell can be corrected to the oil environment. A practical evaluation of the proposed calibration procedure is performed in a laboratory setup on a distribution transformer with different UHF instruments and sensors using artificial PD signals and real high voltage driven PD sources. Finally, this thesis identifies future research topics, which may be needed to improve the proposed UHF calibration procedure for power transformers and the UHF method in general.

The book presents novel concepts of distributed control for networked and cyber-physical systems (CPS), such as smart industrial production lines, smart energy grids, and autonomous vehicular systems. It focuses on new solutions in managing data and connectivity to support connected and automated vehicles (CAV). The book compiles original research papers presented at the conference “Networked Control Systems for Connected and Automated Vehicles” (Russia). The latest connected and automated vehicle technologies for next generation autonomous vehicles are presented. The book sets new goals for the standardization of the scientific results obtained and the advancement to the level of full autonomy and full self-driving (FSD). The book presents the latest research in artificial intelligence, assessing virtual environments, deep learning systems, and sensor fusion for automated vehicles. Particular attention is paid to new safety standards, safety and security systems, and control of epidemic spreading over networks. The issues of building modern transport infrastructure facilities are also discussed in the articles presented in this book. The book is of considerable interest to scientists, researchers, and graduate students in the field of transport systems, as well as for managers and employees of companies using or producing equipment for these systems.

Acoustic emission is defined as the transient elastic energy that is spontaneously released when materials undergo deformation, fracture, or both. This interdisciplinary book consists of 17 chapters, which widely discuss the most important applications of AE method as machinery and civil structures condition assessment, fatigue and fracture materials research, detection of material defects and deformations, diagnostics of cutting tools and machine cutting process, monitoring of stress and ageing in materials, research, chemical reactions and phase transitions research, and earthquake prediction.
