This publication describes the Fork Mountain Long-term Soil Productivity Study (LTSP), located on the Fernow Experimental Forest, WV, and the pretreatment stand, soil and climatic conditions. Extensive vegetation surveys, biomass determinations, site characterization, and analyses of soil physical and chemical characteristics are described herein. The Fork Mountain LTSP site is, based on most metrics, a highly productive site with vegetative diversity typical of most second growth Appalachian hardwood forests. Other than relatively low soil nutrient levels, site characteristics suggest few problems with regeneration. Based on soil characteristics, the site may be susceptible to leaching of base cations as a result of high levels of acidic deposition. Productivity and nutrient characteristics, particularly calcium, varied across the site spatially, but are accommodated in the experimental design. We continue to monitor the response of this ecosystem to these treatments.

Book excerpt: To better understand the impacts of a changing environment and interactions with forest management options for forest resources, including soil, large long-term experiments are required. Such experiments require careful documentation of reference or pre-experimental conditions. This publication describes the Middle Mountain Long-term Soil Productivity (LTSP) Study, located within the Loop Road Research Area of the Monongahela National Forest, WV. This study was initiated in 1997 and pretreatment soil, vegetation, nutrient cycling, and climatic conditions were carefully documented. The Middle Mountain LTSP Study site is a high elevation site and supports a cherry-maple stand of moderate productivity. There is some variability in soil nutrients and plant diversity across the site prior to the initiation of treatments. This site is generally less diverse than the Fork Mountain LTSP Study site in terms of overstory tree species. Experimental treatments started in 1998, and we continue to monitor this site's response to these treatments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree death is a natural part of forest dynamics, yet is not often studied over long periods, particularly in temperate mixed-species hardwood stands. In this study, we evaluated stand dynamics of four reference plots on each of the West Virginia Long-term Soil Productivity (LTSP) Studies. The Fork Mountain LTSP Study was initiated in 1996 and the Middle Mountain LTSP Study in 1997. The two locations represent distinct stand types (mixed mesophytic and cherry-maple) and site conditions (elevation, parent material, aspect). We found that after 20 years, there were differences in patterns of mortality and ingrowth between the two sites. Mortality rates ranged from 1.5 to almost 5 percent for a 5-year period on Fork Mountain to 1 to 1.5 percent on Middle Mountain. Generally, ingrowth exceeded mortality on Fork Mountain, while the reverse was observed on Middle Mountain. Possible reasons for differences in mortality and ingrowth between the two sites include differences in species composition related to soil and site characteristics and differences in past disturbance that have created different stages of stand development.
