Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes are one of the newest materials to be discovered, being barely 20 years old. They are also the most promising one, with one particular sample of multi-walled nanotube attaining a tensile strength of 63GPa, and with carbon nanotubes in general having a specific strength of up to 48000kNm/kg: effectively a direct exploitation of the covalent sp2 bonding between carbon atoms. Plastic deformation begins at about 5% strain. The nanotubes can be produced in lengths of up to 550mm, and thicknesses as small as 4.3Å; making them perfect reinforcement fibres for composites. They also have many other properties which may be useful in electronics, gas storage , etc. The present compilation focuses on the various characteristic types of defect which are found in carbon nanotubes, plus the relatively limited number of diffusion studies which have been performed. The 418 entries cover the period from 1994 to 2014.

Keyword: carbon nanotube Abstracts of 418 articles published in a wide range of technical journals coverfirst defects in carbon nanotubes then the diffusion of various compounds through carbon nanotubes. Those on defects consider such aspects as adsorption, characterization, disclination, the effect on compressive behavior, the effect on thermal conductivity, heptagon, interstitial, pinhole, topological, andvacancy. Among the chemicals addressed in the diffusion studies are alkanes, gold, carbon dioxide, copper, iron, water, Lennard-Jones fluid, nitrogen, silicon, and simple gases. -- Carbon-- Engineering-- Materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon has always been an essential feature of human civilisation (not to mention the human constitution), whether as mere fuel, as an expensive bauble or as an essential component of those two supporting pillars (organic chemicals, steel) of the industrial revolution. Even since its recognition as an element, 21?4 centuries ago, it has never ceased to offer new surprises and properties. Just decades ago, students had to contend with only two main forms, graphite and diamond, but nowadays there is a plethora of nanotubes, fullerenes, graphenes, etc. The present volume offers a compilation (over 400 items) of data on mass diffusion, in all of the various known allotropes of carbon, spanning some 6 decades.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the characterization methods involved with carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube-based composites, with a more detailed look at computational mechanics approaches, namely the finite element method. Special emphasis is placed on studies that consider the extent to which imperfections in the structure of the nanomaterials affect their mechanical properties. These defects may include random distribution of fibers in the composite structure, as well as atom vacancies, perturbation and doping in the structure of individual carbon nanotubes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes are one of the most intriguing new materials with extraordinary properties being discovered in the last decade. The unique structure of carbon nanotubes provides nanotubes with extraordinary mechanical and electrical properties. The outstanding properties that these materials possess have opened new interesting researches areas in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Although nanotubes are very promising in a wide variety of fields, application of individual nanotubes for large scale production has been limited. The main roadblocks, which hinder its use, are limited understanding of its synthesis and electrical properties which lead to difficulty in structure control, existence of impurities, and poor processability. This book makes an attempt to provide indepth study and analysis of various synthesis methods, processing techniques and characterization of carbon nanotubes that will lead to the increased applications of carbon nanotubes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defect Structure and Properties of Nanomaterials: Second and Extended Edition covers a wide range of nanomaterials including metals, alloys, ceramics, diamond, carbon nanotubes, and their composites. This new edition is fully revised and updated, covering important advances that have taken place in recent years. Nanostructured materials exhibit unique mechanical and physical properties compared with their coarse-grained counterparts, therefore these materials are currently a major focus in materials science. The production methods of nanomaterials affect the lattice defect structure (vacancies, dislocations, disclinations, stacking faults, twins, and grain boundaries) that has a major influence on their mechanical and physical properties. In this book, the production routes of nanomaterials are described in detail, and the relationships between the processing conditions and the resultant defect structure, as well as the defect-related properties (e.g. mechanical behavior, electrical resistance, diffusion, corrosion resistance, thermal stability, hydrogen storage capability, etc.) are reviewed. In particular, new processing methods of nanomaterials are described in the chapter dealing with the manufacturing procedures of nanostructured materials. New chapters on (i) the experimental methods for the study of lattice defects, (ii) the defect structure in nanodisperse particles, and (iii) the influence of lattice defects on electrical, corrosion, and diffusion properties are included, to further enhance what has become a leading reference for engineering, physics, and materials science audiences. Provides a detailed overview of processing methods, defect structure, and defect-related mechanical and physical properties of nanomaterials Covers a wide range of nanomaterials including metals, alloys, ceramics, diamond, carbon nanotubes, and their composites Includes new chapters covering recent advances in both processing techniques and methods for the study of lattice defects Provides valuable information that will help materials scientists and engineers highlight lattice defects and the related mechanical and physical properties
