Book excerpt: Did she jump—or was she jumped? A sleuthing couple looks into the disappearance of a young woman on the Golden Gate Bridge . . . An abandoned car on the Golden Gate Bridge usually carries the sad suggestion of suicide. But after Pat and Jean Abbott spot the car in the fog and learn that it belongs to a friend’s niece, Katie Spinner, they begin to suspect that she is not in a watery grave but in the clutches of a kidnapper. When one of Katie’s friends—who was supposed to go with her to the North Beach arts festival—turns up dead, the mystery of the missing young woman becomes only more challenging in this compelling 1950s mystery in the long-running PI series. Praise for the Pat and Jean Abbott Mysteries “Pat does a first-class job of detecting.” —The New York Times “Amusing and sophisticated.” —Daily Star “[A] lively, well-plotted and mystifying case.” —Saturday Review

Book excerpt: In the wake of a chilling attack, an ordinary man decides to take revenge When his wife and daughter are attacked in their home, Paul Benjamin is enjoying a three-martini lunch. A professional man, soft around the middle, Paul lives happily isolated from the rougher side of New York City. As he nurses his gin headache, a call comes from his son-in-law asking him to come to the hospital. In a few hours, his world will collapse around him. As Paul slurped down his lunchtime gin, drug addicts broke into his cozy Upper West Side apartment. For a handful of money, they savagely beat Paul’s wife and daughter, leaving his wife dead and his daughter comatose. After his shock wears off, and Paul realizes the police department is helpless, his thoughts turn to revenge—not just for him, but for every decent family broken by the dark forces of society.

Book excerpt: A fast-paced middle grade novel perfect for fantasy lovers! Lily's thirteenth birthday starts off with a bang. Literally. A present explodes on her porch . . . and soon after, a trio of leprechauns (yes, leprechauns) appears in her bedroom. They whisk her away to a land of clover, piskies, a new friend, a cute boy, and lots of glimmering, glittering gold. A world of Green. It turns out that Lily—as her grandmother was before her—is in line to be keeper for the Clan of Green, in charge of all their gold. That is, if she passes three tests. And she has to pass them. Because if she doesn't? She may never get to go home again. She'll be stuck with the Greens. Forever.

Book excerpt: In the sequel to Death Wish, Paul Benjamin continues his vigilante killing spree Paul Benjamin was an ordinary New Yorker until a gang of drug addicts killed his wife and raped his daughter. When the police proved helpless, Benjamin bought a gun and found his own vengeance, methodically tracking the addicts and killing them one by one. Now he is in Chicago, and the cycle of violence is about to begin anew. On his first night in the city, he stumbles out of a bar in a bad part of town, pretending to be drunk. When two thugs set upon him, they find their quarry sober and armed. He kills them both, escaping before the police arrive. They will not be the last of Chicago’s criminal class to suffer his wrath. Written by Garfield as “penance” for the success of the grisly film adaptation of Death Wish, this sequel shows that when a decent man relies on violence to settle scores, murder becomes addictive.

Book excerpt: The themes that are interwoven like leitmotive in Julien Green's Journal--love, death, art, dreams, water, etc.--are also abundantly present in his novels. Wildgen traces these tapestry-like patterns throughout Green's works with sensitivity and comprehension. ",,,(Wildgen) looks for the deeper ways in which thematic threads connect, and she reveals patterns not previously explored by Green scholars. ...we are indeed in Kathryn Wildgen's debt for this important new achievement in Green studies." --South Atlantic Review.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely understood that the burdens of ecological destruction are borne disproportionately by working-class and poor communities, both through illness and disease caused by pollutants and through the depletion of natural resources from which they make a living. Yet, consistently, the voices of the working class are the most marginalized, excluded, and silenced when discussing how to address ecological concerns and protect the environment from future destruction. Both mainstream environmental groups, such as the Sierra Club and Greenpeace, and radical environmentalists, such as EarthFirst!, are reluctant to engage with working-class and poor communities, often viewing blue-collar workers as responsible for the destruction these groups are trying to prevent. In Green Syndicalism, Shantz issues a call to action to the environmental movement and labor activists, particularly rank and file workers, to join forces in a common struggle to protect the environment from capitalism, corporate greed, and the extraction of resources. He argues for a major transformation to address the "jobs versus the environment" rhetoric that divides these two groups along lines of race and class. Combining practical initiatives and theoretical perspectives, Shantz offers an approach that brings together radical ecology and revolutionary unionism in a promising vision of green politics. Green syndicalists work as coalitions to increase community-based economics and productive decision making that encourages the participation of all stakeholders in the process. Drawing, in part, on his own experiences growing up in a working-class family and organizing within radical ecology and labor movements, Shantz charts a path that accesses the commonalities between these groups in an effort to take on the forces that destroy the environment, exploit people, and harm their communities.
