Book excerpt: THE ASTROLOGY OF DEATH is very unique, first because it is the ONLY astrology book in history, in either the Eastern or Western world, to focus, totally & unequivocally, upon the manner & timing of death. THE ASTROLOGY OF DEATH reviews over 100 case studies of the famous, notorious & obscure to build the argument for the author's discoveries. Second, it introduces unique & unknown methods from Hindu astrology & synthesizes these methods with some equally obscure Western techniques. In support of this, THE ASTROLOGY OF DEATH further provides a previously unavailable glossary of over 1,700 words used in Hindu astrology classics. Over 15 chapters are dedicated to topics such as: murder, suicide, assassination, methods of longevity calculation, why death is sometimes escaped, karmic death links & much more. The author provides a powerful resume proving that he is already one of the most respected astrologers in the country. This is confirmed in the glowing five-page foreword written by James Braha (who has himself written four astrological books including two world-wide best-sellers). Although technical & sophisticated, THE ASTROLOGY OF DEATH is packed with clever commentary, cartoons & over 20 beautiful, death-related collages custom prepared from 19th-century wood engravings. Finally, this 7 x 10 text also includes a resource guide, table of charts & a full index. To order, contact: Groundswell Press, P.O. Box 8925, Gaithersburg, MD 20898 (single copies add $2.95 S&H). Book excerpt: First ever edition of the Latin translation of Ptolemy’s masterwork This is the first edition ever of Moerbeke’s Latin translation of Ptolemy’s celebrated astrological handbook, known under the title Tetrabiblos or Quadripartitum (opus). Ptolemy’s treatise (composed after 141 AD) offers a systematic overview of astrological science and had, together with hisAlmagest, an enormous influence up until the 17th century. In the Latin Middle Ages the work was mostly known through translations from the Arabic. William of Moerbeke’s translation was made directly from the Greek and it is a major scholarly achievement manifesting not only Moerbeke’s genius as a translator, but also as a scientist. The edition is accompanied by extensive Greek-Latin indices, which give evidence of Moerbeke’s astonishing enrichment of the Latin vocabulary, which he needed both to translate the technical scientific vocabulary and to cope with the many new terms Ptolemy created. The introduction examines Moerbeke’s translation method and situates the Latin translation within the tradition of the Greek text. This edition makes possible a better assessment of the great medieval translator and also contributes to a better understanding of the Greek text of Ptolemy’s masterwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tapping into the political power of magic and astrology for social, community, and personal transformation. In a cross-cultural approach to understanding astrology as a magical language, Alice Sparkly Kat unmasks the political power of astrology, showing how it can be channeled as a force for collective healing and liberation. Too often, magic and astrology are divorced from their potency and cultural contexts: co-opted by neoliberalism, used as a force of oppression, or distilled beyond recognition into applications that belie their individual and collective power. By looking at the symbolic and etymological histories of the sun, moon, Saturn, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter, we can trace and understand the politics of magic--and challenge our own practices, interrogate our truths, and reshape our institutions to build better frameworks for communities of care. Fearless, radical, and fresh, Sparkly Kat's Postcolonial Astrology ushers in a new wave of astrology revival, refusing to apologize for its magickism and connecting its power to the spirituality and politics we need now. Intersectional, inclusive, and geared towards queer and POC communities, it uses our historical and collective constructs of the planets, sun, and moon to re-chart our subconscious history, redefine the body in the world, and assert our politics of the personal, in astrology and all things.

Book excerpt: People have been studying the effect of the stars on worldly events for over five thousand years, that is, since the time of ancient Egypt and Chaldea in Mesopotamia. However, the first horoscope for an individual, with place and time of birth, was recorded in 70 BC in Greece.Leo de la Houssaye, an experienced astronomer and astrologer, traces the development of astrology in human history, looking particularly at how human consciousness has changed in relation to star wisdom. He marvels at how quickly the ancient Greeks developed a system of interpretation for the horoscope: already by AD 150 , the basic elements were established which are still used today. In the second part of the book, the author introduces a new element for astrology, the death chart, or the 'spirit birth' chart. Whereas a standard birth chart is an image of what a person brings into the start of their life, a spirit birth chart is an image of the fruits of the life they have lived. De la Houssaye argues that this new chart is important for understanding personal spiritual biographies, and could have a significant impact on the practice of astrology.

Book excerpt: This book describes and analyses the structure and performance of Tibetan Buddhist death rituals, and situates that performance within the wider context of Buddhist death practices generally. Drawing on a detailed and systematic comparative survey of existing records of Tibetan funerary practices, including historical travel accounts, anthropological and ethnographic literature, Tibetan texts and academic studies, it demonstrates that there is no standard form of funeral in Tibetan Buddhism, although certain elements are common. The structure of the book follows the twin trajectories of benefiting the deceased and protecting survivors; in the process, it reveals a rich and complex panoply of activities, some handled by religious professionals and others by lay persons. This information is examined to identify similarities and differences in practices, and the degree to which Tibetan Buddhist funeral practices are consistent with the mortuary rituals of other forms of Buddhism. A number of elements in these death rites which at first appear to be unique to Tibetan Buddhism may only be ‘Tibetan’ in their surface characteristics, while having roots in practices which pre-date the transmission of Buddhism to Tibet. Filling a gap in the existing literature on Tibetan Buddhism, this book poses research challenges that will engage future scholars in the field of Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism and Anthropology.
