Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book excerpt: DEADWOOD, DAKOTA TERRITORIES, 1876: Legendary gunman Wild Bill Hickcock and his friend Charlie Utter have come to the Black Hills town of Deadwood fresh from Cheyenne, fleeing an ungrateful populace. Bill, aging and sick but still able to best any man in a fair gunfight, just wants to be left alone to drink and play cards. But in this town of played-out miners, bounty hunters, upstairs girls, Chinese immigrants, and various other entrepeneurs and miscreants, he finds himself pursued by a vicious sheriff, a perverse whore man bent on revenge, and a besotted Calamity Jane. Fueled by liquor, sex, and violence, this is the real wild west, unlike anything portrayed in the dime novels that first told its story.

Book excerpt: "Given that his contemporaries hailed businessman James K. P. Miller as "the foremost citizen of Deadwood" and stated that his "name will always be coupled with the prosperity of Deadwood and the Black Hills," it would seem that he should be as well remembered as Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, Harris Franklin, and W. E. Adams. Yet, few in Deadwood or elsewhere have ever heard of James K. P. Miller. Dime novels did not make him a Western legend, as they did Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. No buildings carry his name, unlike Bullock and Franklin who have hotels named after them and Adams who has a museum and historic house. Similarly, Miller did not gain fame by dealing with outlaws, like Bullock, by making a fortune, like Franklin, or through philanthropy, like Adams. Miller is not even buried in Deadwood. Though time has erased most evidence of Miller's activities, he refused to let the gold camp wither away when its fortunes faded in the 1880s. By advancing several large projects, persuading outside investors to join him, and convincing railroads to build in, Miller became the town's preeminent promoter and developer. These actions brought a permanency that had never existed before. To some residents, Miller was the "savior of Deadwood.""--
