Book excerpt: In his Dan Barry novels, Max Brand tells the stirring story of the West, with a bigger-than-life character Whistling Dan Barry and his two rather strange companions, a wild and beautiful black stallion named Satan, and a ferocious wolf-dog called Black Bart. One of the most interesting characters in Western fiction, Whistling Dan is a hero of the west. He can fight several man and still win, he is the best gun fighter there is and he can shoot silver dollars in the air. With somewhat supernatural abilities he can control a mighty wild stallion and a vicious wolf-dog. Frederick Schiller Faust (1892-1944) was an American author known primarily for his thoughtful and literary Westerns under the pen name Max Brand. Brand also created the popular fictional character of young medical intern Dr. James Kildare in a series of pulp fiction stories. Prolific in many genres he wrote historical novels, detective mysteries, pulp fiction stories and many more. His love for mythology was a constant source of inspiration for his fiction, and it has been speculated that these classical influences accounted in some part for his success as a popular writer. Many of his stories would later inspire films.

Book excerpt: A generational memoir of the American suburbs, Pull Me Up is a deeply affecting book. With prose that to Frank McCourt "flashes with poetry," New York Times columnist Dan Barry tells the story of an unforgettable American family. He writes so crisply that we not only feel his emotions but also recall our own: the joy of Little League, the thrill of small-town reporting, the pain of losing a parent, and the fear of facing a life-threatening illness. Barry's writing has its own stalwart beauty, a single melody teased out of the American symphony. Here is the voice of an authentic American writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is a Jew in 21st century America? Is membership in “the tribe” defined by shared religious beliefs? Common ethnic backgrounds? Familiar holiday practices? Similar tastes in culture and cuisine? And what do the widely varying answers to those questions mean for the future of the American Jewish community? In 2013, at the suggestion of Jewish Daily Forward editor Jane Eisner, the Pew Research Center completed the most comprehensive and credible survey ever conducted among American Jews. Its findings were nothing short of astounding to communal leaders, demographers and individual Jews alike. In this new e-book, the venerable Forward – the premier source of news, analysis and cultural coverage that matters to the American Jewish community – explains and analyzes the Pew report, with contributions from its own journalists and a diverse selection of other experts. Startling, sobering and sometimes even amusing, this accessible collection of articles and essays will inform and enlarge the critical conversation among American Jews about their communal future. Includes a helpful discussion guide for educators, community and book groups, and leaders of Jewish organizations.
