Book excerpt: Recently there has been a tremendous growth in the chemistry of fluoroorganic compounds, which find wide applicatiori in various fields of technique and are used to solve some basic theoretical problems. The chemical properties of these compounds are rather specific, as well as the methods for their preparation. We realized that no good handbooks on the preparation offluoro organic compounds were available, whereas the methods of pre paration are scattered in numerous scientific papers and patents. Even such a well-known publication as Organic Syntheses contains just a few methods of preparation of fluoroorganic compounds. As a consequence, not only for newcomers but even for specialists, searching for simple and convenient methods for the preparation of the required compounds is tedious. To alleviate the problem, we undertook to prepare this book, which presents detailed preparation methods of more than 300 flu oro organic compounds. Emphasis has been laid on syntheses of polyfluorinated compounds, since they are of major interest with respect to preparation and utility. Preparation of fluoroorganic compounds is based both on the classical methods of organic chemistry and on the specific ones, which is due to the difficulty or even impossibility of the direct introduction of fluorine into a definite position of organic mole cule. Most organic compounds of fluorine are prepared by a suc cession of conversions of a relatively small number of starting compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past fifteen years commercial interest in compounds containing carbon fluorine bonds has burgeoned beyond all expectations, mainly owing to business opportunities arising from work on biologically active fluoroorganics-particularly agrochemicals, the relentless search for new markets for fluoropolymers and fluoro carbon fluids, developments in the field of medical diagnostics, and the drive to find replacements for ozone-depleting CFCs and Halon fire-extinguishing agents. Judging the situation to warrant the publication of a comprehensive collection of up-to-date reviews dealing with commercial organofluorine compounds within a single volume of manageable size (and hence reasonable cost), we were delighted to be invited by Plenum Publishing Corporation to produce a suitable book. In order to provide an authentic and wide-ranging account of current commercial applications of fluoroorganic materials, it clearly was necessary to assemble a sizeable team of knowledgeable contributing authors selected almost entirely from industry. Through their efforts we have been able to produce an almost complete coverage of the modem organofluorochemicals business in a manner designed to attract a reader ship ranging from experts in the field, through chemists and technologists currently unaware of the extent of industrial involvement with fluoroorganics, to students of applied chemistry. Promised chapters dedicated to perfluoroolefin oxides and 18F labeling of radiopharmaceuticals failed to materialize. This is somewhat unfortunate in view of our aim to achieve comprehensive coverage of the subject.

Book excerpt: The present book is essentially based on the lectures on the chemistry of organic compounds of fluorine that I gave in 1969 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia, as a graduate course. References to material published to the end of 1969 are included. The book is primarily meant to provide the background for such a course, and, at the same time, to be a brief survey of recent knowledge in, and an introduction to deeper study of, this area of chemistry, which has been treated in a number of com prehensive monographs. I would like to thank Professor S. C. Cohen, Syracuse University, for the compilation of the data on mass spectra and nuclear magnetic res onance spectra, and my son, Tomas Hudlicky, and my daughter, Eva Hudlickci, for their help with the indexes. Book excerpt: The excitement of the chemistry of organofluorine compounds stems from the unique reactions that arise and the "special effects" that introduction of fluorine impart on a molecule. Indeed, these effects are now exploited in a remarkable array of applications the whole of the chemical, pharmaceutical, and plant-protection industries. In this two-volume set, we have gathered authors with immense experience in various aspects of their fields and each is a world-authority on the important topics which they have described. The first volume treats the chemistry of fluorinated alkenes, which are important "building-blocks" for the synthesis of a range of fluorinated systems and are used widely in industry. The second volume is directed to techniques and synthons for obtaining fluorinated compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A must-have resource for all the researchers working in the organofluorine and related fields This timely two-volume set uniquely focuses on emerging fluorinated motifs beyond R-CF3 and R-F, like R-CF2H, R-OCF3, R-SCF3 and R-SF5. It also offers descriptions of the properties, synthesis, and applications of these emerging fluorinated motifs in order to help readers design new chemical entities, while providing new interest for researchers in organofluorine chemistry and new tools for those in other areas. Emerging Fluorinated Motifs: Synthesis, Properties and Applications begins with a description of carbon-linked fluorine-containing groups that include monofluoromethyl and difluoromethyl groups. It then details combinations of heteroatoms, Oxygen, Sulfur, Selenium, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus with fluorine-containing groups, outlining subsections of the most popular current motifs. Fluoroalkyl ethers, thioethers, and the recent blossoming of the SF5 unit is covered. Other chapters look at: selenium-linked fluorine-containing motifs; construction of N?CF2H, N?CF3, N?CH2CF3 motifs; and the synthesis and applications of P¿Rf-containing molecules. -Focuses on the synthesis, properties, and applications of emerging fluorinated motifs -Covers carbon-linked fluorine-containing motifs, oxygen-linked fluorine-containing motifs, sulfur-linked fluorine-containing motifs, and more -Appeals to academic and industrial researchers working in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, food chemistry, and materials science -Edited by world-renowned experts in organofluorine chemistry Emerging Fluorinated Motifs is intended for academic research institutes, university libraries, researchers, graduate students, postdoctors, and researchers in the chemical industry.
