Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Gems Found in North Carolina North Carolina, with its magnificent mountains and its swiftly running rivers and streams, has now for some years come to possess almost as great a charm for the Northern as it long before had for the Southern tourist. The land of the Sky has become a favorite resort for the traveler, the invalid, the sportsman, the lover of nature, and the seeker for rest, from almost every part of the country. For the mineralogist, too, it has peculiar interest, so great, indeed, that its scenic attractions have, for such as he, been almost overmatched, not to say overlooked, in the search for the beautiful crystals that are found in its mountains, and the variety of rare, minute, and interesting minerals that occur in the brooks and streams associated with gold. Among these crystals and sands occur many minerals that have yielded true gems, and North Carolina has hence become one of the most notable States for gem pro duction in the American Union. The finding of these minerals, however, has been in most cases a secondary or incidental result in the search for and mining of substances more immediately desired for practical use on a larger scale. These last have been essentially three, which have developed in succession, and mark several stages in the mineral production of North Carolina. The area described in this report is in southern California and includes a part of the group of mountains known as the Peninsular Ranges. It lies southeast of Los Angeles and north of San Diego. The area is about 70 miles from north to south and somewhat less from east to west. It includes parts of Orange, Riverside, and San Diego Counties. The two quadrangles east of the area mapped in detail have been covered in reconnaissance. Much of the area is mountainous or hilly. Santiago Peak (elevation 5480 feet) is only 20 miles from the ocean, and in a distance of less than 10 miles, on its southeastern slopes, it reaches an elevation of about 5000 feet. East of the area the mountains rise much higher. San Jacinto Peak has an elevation of feet. The largest area of flat land is near the coast in the northwestern part of the area. Around the city of Santa Ana. Smaller areas of terraces are present to the south, but in many parts of the area the hills extend nearly or quite to the ocean. Another large area of flat land lies around Riverside in the northern part of, and to the north of, the area. Many smaller valleys lie in the mountain area. Snowy clusters of wild plums or of service blossoms shine out from the woods here and there, but the event of the day is the endless procession of blossom ing peach trees. They go dancing by, hour after hour; trees, old and young, large and small, standing in all attitudes, graceful, laughing, exquisite there is no end to them. From the sea to the mountains, the whole South is smiling through a veil Of peach blossoms. As finally you approach the mountains that form the western end Of North Carolina, you catch glimpses of heights SO divinely blue that you seem about to enter some dream world through their magical por tals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sillimanite Deposits in North Carolina This report describes the principal Sillimanite deposits in North Carolina. In the first comprehensive report on a new mineral it is desirable to give a complete description of the geology of the mineral, but time allotted to the study did not permit detailed geological studies; therefore, this phase of the report has been kept to a minimum. An attempt has been made to assemble the data in such form that they would be of use to those who are interested in prospecting, mining, and using Sillimanite. The reconnaissance field work has shown that Sillimanite occurs in most all counties west of the cen tral Piedmont area of the State. The major Sillimanite deposits and those offering the best, production possibilities occur in two belts, one located in the upper Piedmont, designated the Cliffside - Elkin belt, and the other located west of the Blue Ridge designated the warne-sylva belt. The authors are aware of Sillimanite occurrences outside of these two principal belts, but most of these other known occurrences are small and appear to be of little economic importance. The two principal belts are SO extensive that it was not feasible to obtain all the desired data. Since the deposits are spread over large areas, one of the problems confronting those interested in the Sillimanite has been that of determining which deposits are best suited for mining and concentration. It is hoped that the data presented in this report will serve to delimit the deposits so that the more promising -ones can be more readily selected.
