Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a practical guide to the historical study of international politics. The focus is on the nuts and bolts of historical research--that is, on how to use original sources, analyze and interpret historical works, and actually write a work of history. Two appendixes provide sources sure to be indispensable for anyone doing research in this area. The book does not simply lay down precepts. It presents examples drawn from the author's more than forty years' experience as a working historian. One important chapter, dealing with America's road to war in 1941, shows in unprecedented detail how an interpretation of a major historical issue can be developed. The aim throughout is to throw open the doors of the workshop so that young scholars, both historians and political scientists, can see the sort of thought processes the historian goes through before he or she puts anything on paper. Filled with valuable examples, this is a book anyone serious about conducting historical research will want to have on the bookshelf.

Book excerpt: The modern computer is so powerful that a casual knowledge of programming suffices for most of its users. However, a variety of circumstances can abruptly require a much deeper understanding: the need to structure a program carefully to avoid being overwhelmed by its complexity, the need to insure reliability beyond what can be achieved by debugging, or the need to utilize computing resources efficiently. Beyond such practical considerations is an inherent intellectual satisfaction in mastering the fundamental concepts of programming. The aim of this book is to provide such mastery concept by concept.

On the basis of re-understanding the theory of global value chains, this book puts forward and expounds the concept of restructuring the global value chain. This book analyzes the background, motivations, paths and effects of enterprises in emerging economies to reconstruct the global value chain and develops a theoretical system to explore the deep-seated logic behind enterprise upgrading. This book concludes that the transformation and upgrading of Chinese enterprises are the most critical initiatives in seeking a new balance in the world economy. It is of great value to the research and policy study of enterprise upgrading and the participation in global competition.

Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the 12th International Symposium on High Speed Marine Vehicles, held virtually as an e-conference for the first time on 15 and 16 October 2020. High Speed Marine Vehicles Conference has almost 30-year history since the first Conference held in Naples in 1991. Since then, it has been an opportunity to present and discuss developments in the design, construction and operation of High Speed Marine Vessels. More than 40 abstracts were submitted for this edition of the conference, and following a rigorous review process, 26 papers were selected for inclusion in this book. These have been divided into 7 sections: CFD/EFD/sea trials; hydrofoils; multi-hull hydrodynamics; planing-hull hydrodynamics; propulsion and ship machinery; second generation intact stability criteria; and structures, loads, strength and materials. Topics covered include updated aspects of and developments in ship design, numerical and experimental hydrodynamics, seakeeping and maneuvering, and marine structures and machinery. This publication will be of interest to researchers from academia, industry, government agencies and certifying authorities, as well as designers and operators of high-speed vessels.

Research was conducted through a literature review, curriculum review, and interviews. This study was done as a small scale study, so the results may not be generalizable across the field of education. Research of this kind helps to promote craft, as well as bring new questions to light for new research studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grows out of the work of a study group convened by the American Branch of the International Law Association. The group had a mandate to examine threats to the rules-based international order and possible responses. The several chapters in the book-all of which are written by distinguished international law scholars--generally support the conclusion that the rules-based international order confronts significant challenges, but it is not unraveling--at least, not yet. Climate change is the biggest wild card in trying to predict the future. If the world's major powers--especially the United States and China--cooperate with each other to combat climate change, then other threats to the rules-based order should be manageable. If the world's major powers fail to address the climate crisis by 2040 or 2050, the other threats addressed in this volume may come to be seen as trivial in comparison. The book consists of fourteen chapters, plus an introduction. Three chapters address specific threats to the rules-based international order: climate change, autonomous weapons, and cyber weapons. Eight chapters address particular substantive areas of international law: jus ad bellum, jus in bello, trade law, investment law, anti-bribery law, human rights law, international criminal law, and migration law. The remaining chapters provide a range of perspectives on the past evolution and likely future development of the rules-based international order as a whole.
