For the integrated photonic circuits, compact and energy efficient phase tuner are indispensable. The compact phase tuner design can benefit quantum photonic computations, optical coherent homodyne and heterodyne detection and other system-on-chip photonic circuits. Different from the transistor-based electronic computation systems counterparts, coherent optical computation circuits require precise control over the electromagnetic field propagating within the circuit, and thus, the development of small footprint and energy efficient phase tuners is crucial. Waveguide-based phase shifters’ is a well-explored area and efforts on improving electronic designs for higher efficiency have been made, such as introducing lateral doped junctions, adopting different metals for local microheaters [18-19]. However, these waveguide-based phase shifter’s dimensions are larger than other active components which occupy most of the space in the circuit layout. As an alternative of this, a mode splitting ring resonator is demonstrated by tuning the inter-modal coupling and ring-waveguide coupling for compact and energy efficient phase shifters. ☐ In chapter 1, general coupled mode theory in two waveguides (phase-matched) are derived and illustrated properly by using the FDTD Lumerical software [4] and MATLAB based modeling. Based on the coupled mode theory, a single microring resonator and double microring resonator is studied. In chapter 2, theoretical analysis of a mode splitting ring is presented. Here two approaches of tuning the mutual and coupling coefficient are demonstrated by using FDTD simulations. In the following chapter 3, the measurement process and the data, interpreted through the CMT and TMM modeling is explained. Finally, in chapter 4, numerically simulated results are presented to have an optimized performance as a phase shifter and group delay line.
