Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the work of noted liberal theologian Gordon Kaufman tracks his career from his first published book, Relativism, Knowledge, and Faith (1960) through his 2006 book, Jesus and Creativity, in light of recent conversations about divine action and modern scientific knowledge. James interprets Kaufman's mature position as a sophisticated reconstruction of divine activity that makes use of recent scientific theory and its naturalistic assumptions in order to revitalize a theocentric frame of reference rooted in classical theological tradition. Though there are costs to be paid in the construction of a theology of "radical naturalism," particularly with respect to the relation between divine action and the human good, Kaufman's program offers a distinctive way forward. After developing a critical analysis of the limitations and possibilities of Kaufman's mature position, James suggests that a christological reconsideration of the meaning of human flourishing offers the prospect of an even more radically naturalistic and theocentric theology.

Book excerpt: Planet Earth continues to creep to the edge of an abyss, and we have no one to blame but ourselves. As we've evolved, we've engaged in egregious behaviors without thinking about the consequences. Whether it's reproducing in large numbers, killing off other species or exploiting natural resources, we've failed to consider the impact of our actions. David Louis Sussman, a lifelong environmentalist, examines our missteps and suggests how we might alter our approach to boost the chances for survival for ourselves and other living things. He explores topics such as: - free will and how it can be a polarizing force; - sexual repression and its destabilizing consequences; - missteps by religious leaders and politicians; - structuring democracy on the basis of rights rather than responsibilities. The rate of extinction of other species is now greater than it has been since the disappearance of the dinosaurs 60 million years ago. There is little doubt that we are the culprits, and we could be next. Our collective decisions have brought about colossal changes in the planet we inherited, and we need to act now to provide future generations with a fighting chance of defeating The Cosmic Cancer.

This book was released on 2000-03-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scientists today think of the universe as essentially purposeless. Likewise, modern and postmodern philosophers have often been suspicious of any religious claims that the natural world embodies and eternal meaning or teleology. Not all scientific thinkers subscribe to this cosmic pessimism, however, and some would even argue that contemporary knowledge is consistent with a religious sense of cosmic purpose. This stimulating book offers candid reflections on the question of cosmic purpose written both by prominent scientists and by scholars representing the world's religious traditions. Examining the issue from a wide variety of perspectives, this is the only current book to deal with cosmic purpose from an interreligious and interdisciplinary perspective. Here scientists such as physicist Andrei Linde and biologist Francisco Ayala come face to face with Islamic scholar Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Hindu philosopher Anindita Niyogi Balslev, and others. They examine such perplexing issues as the possible existence of multiple universes and the implications of seemingly purposive features in life. The contributions address the question of whether a religiously-based notion of a purposeful cosmos is consistent with the latest scientific understanding of nature, and whether theology can affirm the presence of divine action without contradicting science. These essays will challenge readers to ponder their own place in the cosmos as they seek to interpret the visions of the world's great spiritual traditions in the light of natural science.
