Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coping with Adversity addresses the question of why some metropolitan-area regional economies are resilient in the face of economic shocks and chronic distress while others are not. It is particularly concerned with what public policies make a difference in whether a region is resilient. The authors employ a wide range of techniques to examine the experience of all metropolitan area economies from 1978–2014. They then look closely at six American metropolitan areas to determine what strategies were employed, which of these contributed to regional economic resilience, and which did not. Charlotte, North Carolina, Seattle, Washington, and Grand Forks, North Dakota, are cases of economic resilience, while Cleveland, Ohio, Hartford, Connecticut, and Detroit, Michigan, are cases of economic nonresilience. The six case studies include hard data on employment, production, and demographics, as well as material on public policies and actions. The authors conclude that there is little that can done in the short term to counter economic shocks; most regions simply rebound naturally after a relatively short period of time. However, they do find that many regions have successfully emerged from periods of prolonged economic distress and that there are policies that can be applied to help them do so. Coping with Adversity will be important reading for all those concerned with local and regional economic development, including public officials, urban planners, and economic developers.

A book for our times, indeed, for all time, ourselves and our families." - Admiral Bill Owens, US Navy (Ret), Former Vice-Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff No one escapes adversity in this life. At times we all struggle with personal pain that can seem unfair and overwhelming. How do we move forward without turning to self- destructive ways of coping or simply giving up? Christopher Greco's dynamic and faith-inspired book, 8 Steps to Overcoming Everyday Adversity, offers a concise roadmap on how to overcome whatever hardship we face, whether it's dealing with failure, illness, loss and grief, difficult life choices, anxiety about the future, or other challenges. Drawing heavily from his own personal experience, Greco describes how he overcame the event that changed his life and affected him and his family for many years. Rather than become a statistic, Greco sought to improve himself by leaning on his faith, learning in the process that dealing head-on with adversity, hardship, and suffering are necessary parts of the human experience and essential for personal growth. Greco believes we are put on this earth with a mission and lessons to be learned. How we handle adversity can help others find the strength to cope with their challenges as well. The path to a fulfilling, balanced life is possible no matter the circumstances, and this book will show you the way. christophergreco.org

Book excerpt: Are you ready to create success in your life? There are identifiable differences between people who succeed in achieving their goals and those who fail. This book provides a research-based understanding of those differences, a clear model for developing a strong personal foundation for success, and five powerful strategies for overcoming the adversity that occurs in your life and achieving the results you want. RISE ABOVE IT is based on the philosophy that it is not what happens to you in life that determines success, but how you respond to what happens. Successful people use specific strategies that allow them to respond effectively and support their ability to be successful. It has been said that the best way to predict the future is to create it. If we are to create a future that includes success - whatever success means to each of us - it is essential that we equip ourselves with the necessary mindset, life skills, and lifestyle. It is to that end that this book is written. Based both on research and real life experiences, RISE ABOVE IT is a wonderful resource for developing new attitudes and behaviors. It provides the foundation you need for coping effectively with life's challenges and for moving continuously toward the achievement of your goals.
