Book excerpt: This is a significant book that investigates how the French internal resistance and external Free French movement were financed during the Second World War. It brings together the secretive financial aspects of resistance inside France with those under the control of the Free French movement in London. To date, there have been a number of studies that have followed the Gaullist movement, but none have studied how they were funded. This exploration also demonstrates the global scale of the war. It shows how the Free French were not simply a European, Atlantic-based movement, but were, in fact, colonial and operated on a global scale, shedding light on French relations with their colonies in Africa and the Pacific. It underlines the role played by expatriates, those belonging to the French diaspora and third-country nationals, in Allied nations and neutral countries, including Central and South America. Through the combination of digital humanities methods, including social network analysis and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), the Allied funding for de Gaulle’s movement and the internal resistance will be unveiled, for the first time, in its entirety. The painstaking reconstruction of the financial records of the Free French and their lines of subsidy is a novel approach that sheds new light onto the financial networks between French, British and American officials who made this financing possible. This illuminates the complexity of international relations in a time of war. Using a combination of economic and accounting analysis, as well as primary-sourced historical research, this book distinctively applies sociological methodologies to this long-held question. This book will be of interest to those in economics, economic history, finance, accounting, digital humanities, modern history, international relations, political science and war studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume fills a major gap in publications on migration and digital media worlds by bringing information and communication technology (ICT) to the fore of our understanding of migrants’ experiences in, and practices of, connectivity and mobility. During recent decades, migration within and from East Asia has become paradigmatic of the changing substance and patterns of global mobility. Focusing on migration within and beyond East Asia, a region defined by its global migration and its leading role in ICT use and development, this volume explores the pervasive use of smartphones as an everyday reality for East Asian migrants, advocating the necessity of understanding how they live their lives both online and offline. In this respect, the originality of this volume lies in its interdisciplinary analysis of migrants’ activities at the crossroads between physical and digital spaces. Our theoretical innovation and empirical findings will open an avenue to investigate the novel shape and scales of contemporary connectivity and mobility.

Michaela Going from a record label back to my home town was something I never imagined. When I realized my dream was nothing but a nightmare, I couldn’t run fast enough. I wasn’t expecting everyone to see me as a some big star… and I definitely wasn’t expecting my older brother’s best friend to be living down the hall. West Abbott starred in every single one of my teenage daydreams. And now he’s quickly becoming the subject of every adult fantasy too. He’s my brother’s best friend, but that does nothing to stop the fire that sparks when he touches me. But will he still want me when he finds out the dream world I’ve told him about is nothing but make believe? West The Mikey I remember is still the two-year-old with platinum blonde dandelion fluff for hair. But that’s not who I find in the kitchen at three in the morning. Mikey is now Michaela, and I can’t ignore that she’s all woman now. And that I want all of her. She’s a famous singer. I’m a broke history teacher. She’s my best friend’s baby sister. And for every excuse I come up with to stay away from her, my attraction to her grows until I can’t resist her any more. But I can’t help feeling like she’s hiding something from me. And one lesson I learned after my last relationship crashed and burned? Never again fall in love with someone keeping secrets.
