Book excerpt: This volume is dedicated to Heinz Langer, a leading expert in spectral analysis and its applications, in particular to operators in spaces with an indefinite metric, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The book begins with his biography and list of publications. It contains a selection of research papers, most of which are devoted to spectral analysis of operators or operator pencils with applications to ordinary and partial differential equations. Other papers deal with time-varying systems, interpolation and factorization problems, and topics from mathematical physics. About half of the papers contain further developments in the theory of operators in spaces with an indefinite metric and treat new applications. The book is of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians.

Book excerpt: This volume gathers contributions from the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Its Applications (IWOTA) held in Bangalore, India, in December 2013. All articles were written by experts and cover a broad range of original material at the cutting edge of operator theory and its applications. Topics include multivariable operator theory, operator theory on indefinite metric spaces (Krein and Pontryagin spaces) and its applications, spectral theory with applications to differential operators, the geometry of Banach spaces, scattering and time varying linear systems, and wavelets and coherent states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Operator Theory conferences, organized by the Department of Mathematics of INCREST and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Timi~oara, are conceived as a means to promote cooperation and exchange of information between specialists in all areas of operator theory. This book comprises carefully selected papers on theory of linear operators and related fields. Original results of new research in fast developing areas are included. Several contributed papers focus on the action of linear operators in various function spaces. Recent advances in spectral theory and related topics, operators in indefinite metric spaces, dual algebras and the invariant subspace problem, operator algebras and group representations as well as applications to mathematical physics are presented. The research contacts of the Department of :viathematics of INCREST with the National Committee for Science and Technology of Romania provided means for developing the research activity in mathematics; they represent the generous framework of these meetings too. It is our pleasure to acknowledge the financial support of UNESCO which also contributed to the success of this meeting. We are indebted to Professor Israel Gohberg for including these Proceedings in the OT Series and for valuable advice in the editing process. Birkhauser Verlag was very cooperative in publishing this volume. Camelia Minculescu, Iren Nemethi and Rodica Stoenescu dealt with the difficult task of typing the whole manuscript using a Rank Xerox 860 word processor; we thank them for this exellent job.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Toeplitz operators, Hankel operators, and composition operators on both the Bergman space and the Hardy space. The setting is the unit disk and the main emphasis is on size estimates of these operators: boundedness, compactness, and membership in the Schatten classes. Most results concern the relationship between operator-theoretic properties of these operators and function-theoretic properties of the inducing symbols. Thus a good portion of the book is devoted to the study of analytic function spaces such as the Bloch space, Besov spaces, and BMOA, whose elements are to be used as symbols to induce the operators we study. The book is intended for both research mathematicians and graduate students in complex analysis and operator theory. The prerequisites are minimal; a graduate course in each of real analysis, complex analysis, and functional analysis should sufficiently prepare the reader for the book. Exercises and bibliographical notes are provided at the end of each chapter. These notes will point the reader to additional results and problems. Kehe Zhu is a professor of mathematics at the State University of New York at Albany. His previous books include Theory of Bergman Spaces (Springer, 2000, with H. Hedenmalm and B. Korenblum) and Spaces of Holomorphic Functions in the Unit Ball (Springer, 2005). His current research interests are holomorphic function spaces and operators acting on them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 25 papers, most of which were presented, for the first time, at the International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications held in Groningen, the Netherlands, from June 30-July 3, 1998. The topics include dilation and interpolation problems, reproducing kernel spaces, numerical ranges of operators, Riccati equations, harmonic analysis, spectral theory of differential operators and analytic operator functions to scattering of waves. All papers deal with operators in Banach or Hilbert spaces, or in spaces with an indefinite metric. This volume is dedicated to Israel Gohberg, one of the founding fathers of the IWOTA worskhops and an outstanding leader in operator theory. His work had a deep influence on the field and its range of applications. The IWOTA Groningen 1998, the tenth in its series, was a good occasion for a pre-celebration of his 70th birthday. This book also contains the speeches held at the workshop dinner, a review of Israel Gohberg's contributions to mathematics and a complete list of his publications. The book is of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians.

It displays recent advances in modern operator theory in Hilbert and Krein spaces and contains a collection of original research papers written by many well-known specialists in this field. The papers contain new results for problems close to the area of research of Peter Jonas: Spectral and perturbation problems for operators in inner product spaces, generalized Nevanlinna functions and definitizable functions, scattering theory, extension theory for symmetric operators, fixed points, hyperbolic matrix polynomials, moment problems, indefinite spectral and Sturm-Liouville problems, and invariant subspace problems. This book is written for researchers and postgraduates interested in functional analysis and differential operators.
