Book excerpt: "Taking as their brief the design of a simple fish server or cake slice, the British and American silversmiths whose work is represented in the collection of Benton Seymour Rabinovitch have produced a range of variations on a single theme. From the minimal simplicity of the purely functional to the lavish ostentation of the truly baroque, these pieces utilize elements of sea life, Scandinavian design, Florida Art Deco, eighteenth-century Rococo and totemic, timeless symbols of the natural world to forceful effect. Whether entirely abstract or startlingly representative, what these pieces have in common is the immense technical mastery that has gone into their design and construction - as well as the fact that, no matter how fantastic their appearance, they are all meant for practical use." "Each piece in the collection is illustrated in colour with a specially commissioned photograph and accompanied by an account of the work's conception. Personal accounts of the artists' guiding aesthetic and technical principles provide a long-needed, unique and authoritative window into current design practice both in Britain and the United States." "The authors provide a step-by-step guide to commissioning one's own pieces, as well as a design-historical context to the last fifty years of the craft. Designers and makers, curators and collectors, craft writers and historians, as well as anyone interested in the beautiful, will find in the volume a fund of information and inspiration."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: As a source of information on neuroanatomical research methods this Volume is not without precedent. In 1957, at the initiative of Dr. W. F. Windle, a conference was held at the National Institutes of Health, the proceedings of which, edited by Dr. Windle and published by C. C. Thomas under the title "New Research Tech niques of Neuroanatomy", rapidly became something like a standard reference in the field of Neuromorphology. The present editors were emboldened to seek support for a second expose of contemporary research methods in Neuroanatomy by the success of this earlier publication, as well as by the consideration that the years elapsed since its appearance have been, perhaps, more productive of new research methods and strategies in Neuroanatomy than were any dozen consecutive years since the golden decades of the 1870's and 1880's. The decision, which methods to include in this conference, has been a difficult one. For reasons of space alone it would have been impossible to do equal justice to techniques approaching the brain as a neuronal system, the brain as a tissue, or the neuron as a cell. As a brief inspection of the contents of this volume will show, the weight of choice fell upon the first of these alternatives. The reader will find, further more, that not all of the book is devoted to new methods in the strict sense.

Book excerpt: Translated into English for the first time, On Contemporary Art, a speech by the renowned novelist César Aira, was delivered at a 2010 colloquium in Madrid dedicated to bridging the gap between writing and the visual arts. On Aira’s dizzying and dazzling path, everything comes under question—from reproducibility of artworks to the value of the written word itself. In the end, Aira leaves us stranded on the bridge between writing and art that he set out to construct in the first place, flailing as we try to make sense of where we stand. Aira’s On Contemporary Art exemplifies what the ekphrasis series is dedicated to doing—exploring the space in which words give meaning to objects, and objects shape our words. Like the great writers Walter Benjamin and Hermann Broch before him, Aira operates in the space between fiction and essay writing, art and analysis. Pursuing questions about reproducibility, art making, and limits of language, Aira’s unique voice adds new insights to the essential conversations that continue to inform our understanding of art.
