Its contact with the world in an era of globalization and post-modernity, however, has increasingly led to Taiwanese actors successfully participating in many regional and global fields. In this book an international team of scholars presents cases studies and theoretical debates emphasising agency in coping with the effects of globalisation. In so doing, they contest the image of Taiwan’s marginalization and seek to understand it in terms of its connectedness, whether globally, regionally or trans-nationally. Taking a multi-disciplinary, comparative approach, it covers themes such as markets and trading, diplomacy and nation-branding, collective action, media, film and literature, and religious mission. It thus combines perspectives from several disciplines including media studies, sociology, political science, and studies in religion. Taiwan is also known for its food, with a variety of dishes influenced by the cultures of China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. While Taiwan is a small island, it has a rich and complex history. Originally inhabited by Austronesian tribes, it was colonized by the Dutch in the 17th century and later ruled by the Qing Dynasty of China. In 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan, who controlled the island until the end of World War II. After the war, Taiwan was returned to China, but in 1949, the communist party won the Chinese Civil War and established the People's Republic of China on the mainland. The Nationalist government fled to Taiwan and established the Republic of China, which continues to govern the island today. While Taiwan has faced challenges related to its political status and relationship with China, it has emerged as a prosperous and democratic nation with a unique identity and culture.

Book excerpt: Making Capitalism in China: The Taiwan Connection shows that small- and medium-sized Taiwanese investors are organized in production and marketing networks, not vertically integrated conglomerates. When in China they directly negotiate and establish partnerships with entrepreneurial local officials, not the central bureaucracy. Also, they effectively transfer a capitalist ideology of production to Chinese factory workers. Importantly, the investors attribute their business successes in China to the cultural, historical, and linguistic affinities they share with these local agents. Connections regarding socio-cultural identity do more than facilitate business dealings or ease labor relations; Hsing asserts that partnerships between mainland settlements and overseas Chinese investors constitute a local-global coalition of economic reform, one that strengthens local autonomy in China and bypasses the control of the central government. This coalition is nothing short of a new pattern of foreign direct investment, one profoundly influenced by both cultural boundaries (usually deemed insignificant in matters of capital flow and globalization) and local state agents (who operate in this case as crucial business partners). A notable work that will appeal to all students of East Asian economic organization, ethnic business networks, international investment, and the political economy of socialist transition. Hsing's book is based on hundreds of interviews and participatory observations that she conducted between 1991 and 1996 with investors, local officials, and factory workers in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Guangdong, Fujian, and Shanghai.

Inspired by Western museums and expositions, these institutions were introduced by government officials hoping to spur industrialization and self-disciplined public behavior, and to cultivate an "imperial public" loyal to the emperor. Japan's network of museums expanded along with its colonies. By the mid-1930s, the Japanese museum system had established or absorbed institutions in Taiwan, Korea, Sakhalin, and Manchuria. Not surprising, colonial subjects' views of Japanese imperialism differed from those promulgated by the Japanese state. Meanwhile, in Japan, philanthropic and commercial museums were expanding, revising, and even questioning the state-sanctioned aesthetic canon.
