Book excerpt: Uses techniques from psychological science and legal theory to explore police interrogation in the United States Understanding Police Interrogation provides a single comprehensive source for understanding issues relating to police interrogation and confession. It sheds light on the range of factors that may influence the outcome of the interrogation of a suspect, which ones make it more likely that a person will confess, and which may also inadvertently lead to false confessions. There is a significant psychological component to police interrogations, as interrogators may try to build rapport with the suspect, or trick them into thinking there is evidence against them that does not exist. Also important is the extent to which the interrogator is convinced of the suspect’s guilt, a factor that has clear ramifications for today’s debates over treatment of black suspects and other people of color in the criminal justice system. The volume employs a totality of the circumstances approach, arguing that a number of integrated factors, such as the characteristics of the suspect, the characteristics of the interrogators, interrogation techniques and location, community perceptions of law enforcement, and expectations for jurors and judges, all contribute to the nature of interrogations and the outcomes and perceptions of the criminal justice system. The authors argue that by drawing on this approach we can better explain the likelihood of interrogation outcomes, including true and false confessions, and provide both scholars and practitioners with a greater understanding of best practices going forward.

CHAPTER III SCOTTY UNFOLDS TRUTHS AT the warning cry by the telepathic one, the gang began backing into those shadows and secret places from which they had emerged. Possibly, the prompt production of my Colt's-38 had somewhat to do with their disappearance; for your true gangster is never one to meet the iron face to face. In ancient days there was a party--Pythagoras was the name, I think, though I'll not be sure I've got his number right at that--who taught how men's souls, before they were men's souls, served as the souls of animals. Also, he said that, if you'd sharpen your eyes a bit, you could, in looking a man over, tell whether his soul had been a sheep's soul, or a lion's soul, or a horse's soul, and so on. Now I won't say there's anything in the theory, for it's altogether off my mental beat. What I will say is that if old Pythagoras was right, then the soul of every gangster used aforetime to be the soul of a rat. Ferocious, cowardly, cruel, hungry, unclean!--creatures born to haunt the sewers and infest the cellars of existence!--mere vermin of darkness, with a fear of light!--those gangsters whom I faced were rats, human rats. Being rats, that squeak of warning, coupled with my pistol, muzzle flush in their faces, became with them the instant signal for retreat. In a moment I was alone with Red Bob. Being alone, I yanked Red Bob onto his feet. Partly from the blow, and partly from the red liquor under his belt, he was in a fog. All of a blurr, he didn't know where he was or how he came to be there. This sort of thing is common with drunken men. Let a party, whose skin is soaked full of whiskey, receive a tap from a nightstick, or get jolted out by any other route, and a first insensibility runs off" into a drunken slumber....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This true story of an ex-Marine who fought crime as an undercover cop, a narcotics agent, and finally a federal prosecutor spans a decade of crime fighting and narrow escapes. Charlie Spillers dealt with a remarkable variety of career criminals, including heroin traffickers, safecrackers, burglars, auto thieves, and members of Mafia and Mexican drug smuggling operations. In this riveting tale, the author recounts fascinating experiences and the creative methods he used to succeed and survive in a difficult and sometimes extremely dangerous underworld life. As a young officer with the Baton Rouge Police Department, ex-Marine Charlie Spillers first went undercover to infiltrate criminal groups to gather intelligence. Working alone and often unarmed, he constantly attempted to walk the thin line between triumph and disaster. When on the hunt, his closest associates were safecrackers, prostitutes, and burglars. His abilities propelled him into years of undercover work inside drug trafficking rings. But the longer he worked, the greater the risks. His final and perhaps most significant action in Baton Rouge was leading a battle against corruption in the police department itself. After Baton Rouge, he joined the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and for the next five years continued working undercover, from the Gulf Coast to Memphis; and from New Orleans to Houston, Texas. He capped off a unique career by becoming a federal prosecutor and the justice attaché for Iraq. In this book, he shares his most intriguing exploits and exciting undercover stings, putting readers in the middle of the action.

Detective Sergeant trevor Haken was one of the infamous Golden Mile's most crooked cops. Now he lives in hiding, in a hell of his own creation. Graduating from small bribes to stealing money and receiving kickbacks from drug dealers, Haken became an informant for the Wood Royal Commission into corruption in the New South Wales Police Service. the Commission's findings sent shockwaves through the police force and beyond, resulting in the dismissal and resignation of many officers, and the reorganisation of policing in the state.Haken's role in gathering evidence was crucial to the outcome of the Commission and highly dangerous. If anyone had searched him and found a wire, he would have been killed. And Haken was wired at least eighty times. the danger increased at every meeting.Remarkably, author Sean Padraic gained Haken's support and trust. Using Haken's words and testimony, CONFESSIONS OF A CROOKED COP is a startling expose of a system that was supposed to uphold the truth and protect its citizens, but instead fell into chaos and had corruption at its very heart.
