Book excerpt: Magdalena Krawiec provides insight into the underlying conceptual structure of information technology and gives a plausible account of the patterns of metaphorical conceptualisation manifested in the specialist language of IT. Conceptual metaphors map our concrete experience onto abstract experiences, so as to effortlessly get hold of new emergent concepts. On the one hand, our ability to make our world thinkable rests on the use of our past experiences, whereas on the other hand, IT specialists familiarise themselves with yet unknown conceptual structures through the interaction with the specialist scenery. Specialists' thinkability of the specialist surroundings is grounded in their perception of similarity which enables them to adapt both conceptually and linguistically to their specialist practice.

Book excerpt: This book explores the importance of Cognitive Linguistics for specialized language within the context of Frame-based Terminology (FBT). FBT uses aspects of Frame Semantics, coupled with premises from Cognitive Linguistics to structure specialized domains and create non-language-specific knowledge representations. Corpus analysis provides information regarding the syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of specialized knowledge units. Also studied is the role of metaphor and metonymy in specialized texts. The first section explains the purpose and structure of the book. The second section gives an overview of basic concepts, theories, and applications in Terminology and Cognitive Linguistics. The third section explains the Frame-based Terminology approach. The fourth section explores the role of contextual information in specialized knowledge representation as reflected in linguistic contexts and graphical information. The final section highlights the conclusions that can be derived from this study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an integrated approach to cognitive-linguistic mediation, with aims toward the efficiency of knowledge transfer and acquisition. Problems are approached through the prism of cognitive modelling, and mapped to such fields as intercultural and interdisciplinary communication, and second language teaching. The novelty lies in the synergies between linguistics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, culture, and industry. These fields come together through ontological and metaphorical modelling and the attempts to automate such. This text provides a theoretical background for research on mediation, covering cognitive and communicative perspectives, metaphoricity of terms, and the ontologization of human knowledge. It includes detailed descriptions of methods for different types of cognitive modelling and is intended for students and researchers concerned with terminology, cognitive linguistics, applied linguistics, pragmatics, computational linguistics, literature studies, morphology, syntaxis, and semantics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gareth Morgan’s monumental book, Images of Organization, revolutionized the field of organization theory. In honor of Morgan’s classic text, this edited volume, Exploring Morgan’s Metaphors: Theory, Research, and Practice in Organizational Studies (by Anders Örtenblad, Kiran Trehan, and Linda L. Putnam), illustrates how Morgan’s eight metaphors inform research, practice, and organizational intervention in a variety of contexts. Including contributions from well-known experts in their fields, specifically, Joep Cornelisen, Cliff Oswick, David Grant, and Gareth Morgan, this new text offers fresh perspectives and sets forth new metaphors for conceptualizing organizations in today’s workforce. Readers will gain insights and guidelines into the different ways that Morgan’s metaphors and metaphorical thinking can be used to better understand organizational life, as well as how to study and develop organizations.

Book excerpt: The systems movement, now 40 years old, is made up of many associations of systems thinkers from different disciplines all over the world. The United Kingdom Systems Society (UKSS) was formed in 1978. Today it has over 300 members and is committed to the development and promotion of "systems" philosophy, theory, concepts and methodolo gies for improving decision making for the benefit of organizations and wider society. The first UKSS International Conference was held at the University of Hull in July ofHuddersfield 1989. Since then we have held International Conferences at the Universities (1991) and Paisley (1993). The UKSS International Conferences are now an established biannual event and this, our fourth international conference, will be jointly hosted by the Universities of Hull and Humberside. Systems science is considered to be a trans-discipline which promotes critical and effective intervention in complex organisational and social problem situations. As such it traverses "hard", through "soft" to "critical" systems thinking and methodologies. Yet, despite the currently robust state of the UKSS the systems movement cannot be described as an international movement: different subdisciplines are at different stages of development and are often engaged in pursuing their own particular interests and themes with little "conversation" between the subdisciplines despite their common interest in systems.
