Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressive Strength of Clay Brick Walls Tests of walls built of sand-lime brick have been made and the results reported in Technologic Paper no. 276. The present paper reports and discusses the results of the tests on clay brick masonry. In this report walls numbered 1 to 17 are of such construction as to permit comparison with those built of sand-lime brick, but it should be noted that the sand-lime brick used were Of slightly higher coma pressive strength than those used in the construction of walls 1 to 17, inclusive. The effect Of brick strength on wall strength is dis cussed herein. The tests on masonry Of cement brick have not yet (1929) been made. The scope Of this investigation has been extended much beyond the original plan, for it seemed desirable to discover, if possible, some of the factors which influence or measure masonry strength. It is believed that much pertinent information, not heretofore known and analyzed, has been disclosed and that this information may be useful to engineers and architects and to the construction industry generally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comprehensive and Transverse Strength of Brick Character or texture - The character of the texture does not appear to be related to variation in the ratio of the two compressive strengths. In general, a vitreous structure is associated, with high compressive strength and an open, granular, poorly bonded structure has low strength. But extremes of ratios are associated with both types of structures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about structures that shows students how to "see" structures as integral to architecture, and how knowledge of structures is the basis for understanding both the mechanical and conceptual aspects inherent to the art of building. Analyzing the structural principles behind many of the best known works of architecture from past and present alike, this book places the subject within a contemporary context. The subject matter is approached in a qualitative and discursive manner, and is illustrated by many photographs of architectural projects and structural behaviour diagrams. This new edition is revised and updated throughout, includes worked-out examples, and is perfect as either an introductory structures course text or as a designer’s sourcebook for inspiration.

Book excerpt: The building shell is the interface with the outside world, it offers protection and at the same time represents its owners or occupants. But what are the criteria for choosing a specific shell? Why is a particular material used on a particular undercoat? The fifth volume of the SCALE series, Enclose | Build, is not about the curtain, the dressing of the facade that surrounds a building, but rather on a causal level about the exterior termination of a building, the wall, the facade, which can be made of various materials, surfaces, and achieves different design effects. It shows the conditions under which certain constructions can be employed and why; what criteria such as construction costs, issues of sustainability, of energy efficiency, of assembly or of insulation or protection against moisture can also influence the choice of a system. In addition to classical constructions, Enclose | Build offers a look at future developments. How will the facade evolve as an interface for information? What do viable concepts for environmentally active, energy-efficient building shells look like? Enclose | Build is an indispensable tool for every architect and planner.
