Book excerpt: Comprehensive Hard Materials, Three Volume Set deals with the production, uses and properties of the carbides, nitrides and borides of these metals and those of titanium, as well as tools of ceramics, the superhard boron nitrides and diamond and related compounds. Articles include the technologies of powder production (including their precursor materials), milling, granulation, cold and hot compaction, sintering, hot isostatic pressing, hot-pressing, injection moulding, as well as on the coating technologies for refractory metals, hard metals and hard materials. The characterization, testing, quality assurance and applications are also covered. Comprehensive Hard Materials provides meaningful insights on materials at the leading edge of technology. It aids continued research and development of these materials and as such it is a critical information resource to academics and industry professionals facing the technological challenges of the future. Hard materials operate at the leading edge of technology, and continued research and development of such materials is critical to meet the technological challenges of the future. Users of this work can improve their knowledge of basic principles and gain a better understanding of process/structure/property relationships. With the convergence of nanotechnology, coating techniques, and functionally graded materials to the cognitive science of cemented carbides, cermets, advanced ceramics, super-hard materials and composites, it is evident that the full potential of this class of materials is far from exhausted. This work unites these important areas of research and will provide useful insights to users through its extensive cross-referencing and thematic presentation. To link academic to industrial usage of hard materials and vice versa, this work deals with the production, uses and properties of the carbides, nitrides and borides of these metals and those of titanium, as well as tools of ceramics, the superhard boron nitrides and diamond and related compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the first International Conference on the Science of Hard Materials held in Moran, Wyoming, Aug. 23-28, 1981. The objective of the conference was to review and advance the state of knowledge of the basic physical and chemical properties of hard materials and show how these properties influence performance in a variety of applications. To this end, the 49 con tributed papers and the four keynote papers by Prof. Fischmeister and Drs. Hintermann, Exner and Almond, present an excellent overview of the state of the art in the "science" of hard materials. The contents of these proceedings also reflect the fact that hard metal technology is now well matured and several aspects of the behavior of these materials are well understood and firmly established. Structure-property relationships in this class of materials are currently well known. Pitfalls in some of the traditional test methods have been recognized and new test methods are being developed which discriminate between intrinsic material properties and flaw content and distribution. Application of fracture mechanics, al though a late corner to the hard materials area (as compared to other structural materials), is rapidly gaining acceptance and new fracture toughness test methods are being developed. Application of modern analysis and analytical techniques to these materials has begun and entirely new and unexpected information has been obtained. For a variety of reasons, "hard metals" have dominated the research and development scene of "hard materials".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the potential applications of hard materials as well as the latest trends and challenges in machining hard materials. Models for online monitoring to adjust parameters to obtain desired machining characteristics (i.e. reverse modelling) are discussed in this book. The conflicting requirements (i.e. maximize: material removal rate, roundness and minimize: surface roughness, dimensional ovality, co axiality, tool wear) in machining for industry personal is solved using advanced optimization tools. In addition, the framework for experimental modelling, predictive physic-based forward and reverse process models and optimization for better machining characteristics applicable to industry are proposed.

Book excerpt: This book discusses microstructure-property correlations and explores key microstructure features and how they affect the properties of a material. The authors discuss the effect of manufacturing and processing routes on microstructure and properties. They identify appropriate microstructure and mechanical characterization techniques essential for developing accurate microstructure-property relationships. The techniques include high resolution imaging methods and properties measurements such as hardness, strength, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness. Current and future trends in hard and superhard material design are revealed by the authors, including nanostructured materials, biomimicry, and novel manufacturing technologies.

This book was released on 1986-06-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second International Conference on the Science of Hard Materials was held at Rhodes in September 1984. The delegation of 153 drew representatives from 23 countries. Of the papers presented 64 have been carefully selected and edited to give this comprehensive yet balanced survey of the advances made since the previous meeting. This compilation also looks foward and highlights areas where more research will soon be urgently needed if further progress is to be made. The scope of this meeting has increased greatly since the first which was held in 1981 by broadening the definition of 'hard' to encompass 'greater than 1000 HV' thereby covering, in addition to WC-Co based hardmetals, Ti-C based hardmetals, and a range of other systems as well as diamond and nitrides and borides of non-metals, especially boron and silicon. Moreover, more material on all the fundamental mechanisms involved has also been included. The topics reported include atomic bonding, fundamental properties, mechanical testing and characteristics, superhard materials, fundamentals of microstructure and deformation, ceramics, cermets and hardmetals, coatings and manufacture. This book is further enhanced by the inclusion of a comprehensive subject index. It is possible to gain a general overview of the factors relevant to the science of hard materials through the carefully chosen papers collected here, in addition to a detailed insight into specific areas. As such this book will be invaluable to all researchers and technologists concerned with hard metals and their characteristics.
