Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Guide to the English Lakes It is now some months since I committed the manuscript of this Lake Guide to the Publisher's hands; and now that the work is just ready to appear, I am thankful to him for the opportunity of saying, in this prefatory page, with what pride and pleasure I have looked over the accessories and embellishments with which, by his zeal and spirit, and by the admirable co-operation he has been so fortunate as to secure, my humble work is elevated to a quality of real importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the English Lakes of Cumberland and Westmorland For the accommodation of strangers about to make the tour of the Lake District, and who are in doubt, from the number of routes, which, and in what order to take them, we have drawn up an abstract of four tours, which it is supposed com mence at each of the four principal railway stations lying upon the edge of the district - viz. Each of the tours may be accomplished in from three to six days. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Lakes IN compiling this little work, I have been haunted by the saying of, I think, Christopher North, Live fifty years on the banks of Windermere, and you may possibly have something worth say ing about it. It may indeed seem a little pre sumptuous for one who is merely a summer visitant to Lakeland, to write about it even a book of the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive Guide to the English Lakes and Adjacent Mountains: With Notices of the Botany, Mineralogy, and Geology of the District Guides and Tours to the Lakes have been and continue to be offered to the Public in various forms and sizes; but they are chiefly devoted to a single object - the picturesque appearance of the Country; to the exclusion of other important considerations. It is admitted, that the gratification of the eye is a leading motive with many of those who make the Tour of the Lakes; but it is not so with all. The reflecting mind will feel more satisfaction in having gained some knowledge of the structure, the natural history, and productions of the region he has visited. As a resident among the objects he attempts to describe, the Author of this Manual has possessed many opportunities of making observations, which will escape the notice of the transient visiter - the compiler from the works of others - or even of one who undertakes a tour for the professed purpose of making a book. Availing himself of these advantages, and a little experience in surveying, he constructed a Map of the District, divested of many errors which had been copied into former maps, and containing some particulars not to be found in any other. This Map has been accompanied with such descriptions, directions, and remarks, as were judged likely to be serviceable to the future Tourist; in conducting him through the most eligible paths for viewing the varied scenery, and at the same time conveying some information on the structure and phenomena of these interesting regions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book to the English Lakes: With Map and Engravings That a small Guide, or Hand-Book, pointing out, and briefly describing all the places of interest in the Lake District, and reduced to a more portable and convenient size than any hitherto published, has long been a desideratum, it is almost needless to mention; and, now that railway communication enables parties to approach in a cheap, easy, and expeditious manner, additional numbers will avail themselves of the opportunity of visiting a country which in scenery, in historic and poetic associations, and the want of a Guide not so cumbersome or expensive as those at present in use must have been deeply felt. The present Work is intended to supply this deficiency. The Compiler has indicated the best routes to be taken, and has given, in a concise form, an account of those objects worthy of being visited, placing them in that order in which the tourist will find them; and where more routes than one can be taken they are pointed out, leaving the visiter to select at his option, and adopt those most suiting his time and convenience.
