Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IBM® Power Virtualization Center (IBM® PowerVCTM) is an advanced enterprise virtualization management offering for IBM Power Systems. This IBM Redbooks® publication introduces IBM PowerVC and helps you understand its functions, planning, installation, and setup. It also shows how IBM PowerVC can integrate with systems management tools such as Ansible or Terraform and that it also integrates well into a OpenShift container environment. IBM PowerVC Version 2.0.0 supports both large and small deployments, either by managing IBM PowerVM® that is controlled by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), or by IBM PowerVM NovaLink. With this capability, IBM PowerVC can manage IBM AIX®, IBM i, and Linux workloads that run on IBM POWER® hardware. IBM PowerVC is available as a Standard Edition, or as a Private Cloud Edition. IBM PowerVC includes the following features and benefits: Virtual image capture, import, export, deployment, and management Policy-based virtual machine (VM) placement to improve server usage Snapshots and cloning of VMs or volumes for backup or testing purposes Support of advanced storage capabilities such as IBM SVC vdisk mirroring of IBM Global Mirror Management of real-time optimization and VM resilience to increase productivity VM Mobility with placement policies to reduce the burden on IT staff in a simple-to-install and easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) Automated Simplified Remote Restart for improved availability of VMs ifor when a host is down Role-based security policies to ensure a secure environment for common tasks The ability to enable an administrator to enable Dynamic Resource Optimization on a schedule IBM PowerVC Private Cloud Edition includes all of the IBM PowerVC Standard Edition features and enhancements: A self-service portal that allows the provisioning of new VMs without direct system administrator intervention. There is an option for policy approvals for the requests that are received from the self-service portal. Pre-built deploy templates that are set up by the cloud administrator that simplify the deployment of VMs by the cloud user. Cloud management policies that simplify management of cloud deployments. Metering data that can be used for chargeback. This publication is for experienced users of IBM PowerVM and other virtualization solutions who want to understand and implement the next generation of enterprise virtualization management for Power Systems. Unless stated otherwise, the content of this publication refers to IBM PowerVC Version 2.0.0.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storage Systems: Organization, Performance, Coding, Reliability and Their Data Processing was motivated by the 1988 Redundant Array of Inexpensive/Independent Disks proposal to replace large form factor mainframe disks with an array of commodity disks. Disk loads are balanced by striping data into strips—with one strip per disk— and storage reliability is enhanced via replication or erasure coding, which at best dedicates k strips per stripe to tolerate k disk failures. Flash memories have resulted in a paradigm shift with Solid State Drives (SSDs) replacing Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) for high performance applications. RAID and Flash have resulted in the emergence of new storage companies, namely EMC, NetApp, SanDisk, and Purestorage, and a multibillion-dollar storage market. Key new conferences and publications are reviewed in this book. The goal of the book is to expose students, researchers, and IT professionals to the more important developments in storage systems, while covering the evolution of storage technologies, traditional and novel databases, and novel sources of data. We describe several prototypes: FAWN at CMU, RAMCloud at Stanford, and Lightstore at MIT; Oracle's Exadata, AWS' Aurora, Alibaba's PolarDB, Fungible Data Center; and author's paper designs for cloud storage, namely heterogeneous disk arrays and hierarchical RAID. Surveys storage technologies and lists sources of data: measurements, text, audio, images, and video Familiarizes with paradigms to improve performance: caching, prefetching, log-structured file systems, and merge-trees (LSMs) Describes RAID organizations and analyzes their performance and reliability Conserves storage via data compression, deduplication, compaction, and secures data via encryption Specifies implications of storage technologies on performance and power consumption Exemplifies database parallelism for big data, analytics, deep learning via multicore CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs, e.g., Google's Tensor Processing Units

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the engineering principles of embedded systems, with a focus on modeling, design, and analysis of cyber-physical systems. The most visible use of computers and software is processing information for human consumption. The vast majority of computers in use, however, are much less visible. They run the engine, brakes, seatbelts, airbag, and audio system in your car. They digitally encode your voice and construct a radio signal to send it from your cell phone to a base station. They command robots on a factory floor, power generation in a power plant, processes in a chemical plant, and traffic lights in a city. These less visible computers are called embedded systems, and the software they run is called embedded software. The principal challenges in designing and analyzing embedded systems stem from their interaction with physical processes. This book takes a cyber-physical approach to embedded systems, introducing the engineering concepts underlying embedded systems as a technology and as a subject of study. The focus is on modeling, design, and analysis of cyber-physical systems, which integrate computation, networking, and physical processes. The second edition offers two new chapters, several new exercises, and other improvements. The book can be used as a textbook at the advanced undergraduate or introductory graduate level and as a professional reference for practicing engineers and computer scientists. Readers should have some familiarity with machine structures, computer programming, basic discrete mathematics and algorithms, and signals and systems.
