Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a snapshot of the state of the art of oculomotor and vestibular research, focusing on the bridge between laboratory and clinical research and the interdisciplinary relationships among ophthalmology, neurology, and otology. A common theme in contemporary neuroscience is how the brain learns and adapts at the most basic levels and how patients can benefit from this type of research. Recent advances in the physiology and anatomy of the eye muscles and other orbital structures and their relevance to strabismus sets the stage in the first section. Then, attention shifts to the vestibular system, beginning with the peripheral applications to clinical neuro-otology, including adaptive control of vestibular reflexes and the implications for programs of physical rehabilitation of patients. Further chapters are directed toward the mechanisms of eye movement control developed specifically in foveate species -- saccades, pursuit, and vergence -- here with an emphasis on applications to clinical neurology and neuro-ophthalmology. Finally, the role of higher-level cerebral processing in the control of eye movements is presented in the framework of state-of-the-art brain imaging and sophisticated behavioral testing paradigms in both humans and experimental animals. The volume provides a critical update from a number of disciplines -- both clinical and basic -- to bring basic physiology to the bedside and vice versa. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Ninth European Conference on Eye Movements (ECEM 9), held in Ulm, Germany, on September 23-26, 1997. ECEM 9 con tinued a series of conferences initiated by Rudolf Groner of Bern, Switzerland, in 1981 which, from its very beginning, has brought together scientists from very diverse fields with a common interest in eye movements. About 40 of the papers presented at ECEM 9 have been selected for presentation in full length while others are rendered in condensed form. There is a broad spectrum of motives why people have become involved in, and fas cinated by, eye movement research. Neuroscientists have been allured by the prospect of understanding anatomical findings, single unit recordings, and the sequels of experimental lesions in terms of the clearly defined system requirements and the well documented be havioural repertoire of the oculomotor system. Others have been attracted by the richness of this repertoire and its dependence on an intricate hierarchy of factors spanning from "simple" reflexes to visual pattern recognition and spatio-temporal prediction. Neurolo gists, neuro-ophthalmologists and neuro-otologists have long standing experience with eye movements as sensitive indicators of lesions in the brain stem, the midbrain, and the cere bellum. By studying oculomotor malfunctions they have made, and are continuing to make, important contributions to our understanding of oculomotor functions.

Book excerpt: This Annals volume presents proceedings of the conference "Basic and Clinic Ocular Motor and Vestibular Research," held as a tribute to the career of Dr. Richard John Leigh in Buenos Aires, Argentina from March 25–27, 2011. Leigh, a world-renowned expert in the neurological control of normal and abnormal eye movements and an exemplary clinician-scientist and mentor, has significantly advanced our understanding of eye movement control systems. The volume features latest research in the field from experts in ocular motor and vestibular science. Topics covered include: ocular motor periphery; brainstem and superior colliculus control mechanisms; cerebellar control mechanisms; basal ganglia and cerebral hemisphere control mechanisms; and nystagmus and multiple sclerosis.
