Book excerpt: According to the most updated epidemiological studies, cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death; in fact, despite substantial advances in the care of patients, the incidence of cardiovascular disorders continues to increase. Therefore, the search for novel mechanisms and therapeutics is desperately needed, and translational studies represent the best strategy to uncover novel therapeutic targets, reduce mortality, and improve the quality of life. This book gathers original articles and systematic reviews that have both a strong basic research background and clear translational potential. All the studies have been peer reviewed by at least two experts in the field. These contributions provide an updated systematic overview that examines, in detail, the mechanisms of the main cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, including ischemic and non-ischemic heart failure, hypertension, thromboembolism, atherosclerosis, stroke, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, valvulopathies, peripheral artery disease. In the final chapter, the functional role of the endothelium in the systemic manifestations of COVID-19 is described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inflammation in Heart Failure, edited by W. Matthijs Blankesteijn and Raffaele Altara, is the first book in a decade to provide an in-depth assessment on the causes, symptoms, progression and treatments of cardiac inflammation and related conditions. This reference uses two decades of research to introduce new methods for identifying inflammatory benchmarks from early onset to chronic heart failure and specifically emphasizes the importance of classifying at-risk subgroups within large populations while determining the patterns of cytokines in such classifications. Further, the book details clinical applications of the pathophysiological mechanisms of heart failure, diagnosis and therapeutic strategies. Inflammation in Heart Failure’s breadth of subject matter, easy-to-follow structure, portability, and high-quality illustrations create an accessible benefit for researchers, clinicians and students. Presents updated information and research on the relevant inflammatory mediators of heart failure to aid in targeting future translational research as well as the improvement of early diagnosis and treatment Provides research into better understanding the different inflammatory mediators that signal the underlying diseases that potentially lead to heart failure Contains 20 years of research, offering a brief overview of the topic leading to current opinions on, and treatment of, heart failure Provides a structured, systematic and balanced overview of the role of inflammation in heart failure making it a useful resource for researchers and clinicians, as well as those studying cardiovascular diseases

Book excerpt: The Impact of Nutrition and Statins on Cardiovascular Diseases presents a summary of the background information and published research on the role of food in inhibiting the development of cardiovascular diseases. Written from a food science, food chemistry, and food biochemistry perspective, the book provides insights on the origin of cardiovascular diseases, an analysis of statin therapy, their side effects, and the role of dietary intervention as an alternative solution to preventing cardiovascular diseases. It focuses on the efficacy of nutrition and statins to address inflammation and inhibit the onset of disease, while also providing nutrition information and suggested dietary interventions. Includes a bioscience approach that focuses on inflammation and revisits the lipid hypothesis Presents the view that nutritional interventions have considerable value, not only for reducing cardiovascular risk for CVDs patients, but also acting as the best precaution for otherwise healthy people Advocates that nutritional habits that are formed at a young age are the best way to tackle the global epidemic that is CVDs

Book excerpt: [Increasing evidence suggests that microbiota and especially the gut microbiota (the microbes inhabiting the gut including bacteria, archaea, viruses, and fungi) plays a key role in human physiology and pathology. Recent findings indicate how dysbiosis—an imbalance in the composition and organization of microbial populations—could severely impact the development of different medical conditions (from metabolic to mood disorders), providing new insights into the comprehension of diverse diseases, such as IBD, obesity, asthma, autism, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Given that microbial cells in the gut outnumber host cells, microbiota influences human physiology both functionally and structurally. Microbial metabolites bridge various—even distant—areas of the organism by way of the immune and hormone system. For instance, it is now clear that the mutual interaction between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain (gut–brain axis), often involves gut microbiota, indicating that the crosstalk between the organism and its microbial residents represents a fundamental aspect of both the establishment and maintenance of healthy conditions. Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that beyond the intestinal tract, microbiota populates other host organs and tissues (e.g., skin and oral mucosa). We have edited this eBook with the aim of publishing manuscripts focusing on the impact of microbiota in the development of different diseases and their associated treatments.]
