Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of the research undertaken in this book the author concludes that the so called "anti-Jewish" texts in Johannine Gospel are not directed against the Jews being an ethnic or religious community. The object of the polemic and attacks is not the entire Jewish nation across the span of all the ages but a group of the Jewish leaders or opponents to Jesus in the First Century AD. Looking through the prism of the aposynagogal polemics, one can notice that the state of tension between the Johannine community and the rabbinic Judaism is inter-Jewish, not anti-Jewish, in character. The source of the polemical language of the Fourth Gospel is the Christological discussion in the historical and sociological context (the Messianic confession, the excommunication from the Synagogue, the presence of Samaritans in the Johannine community, the struggle for the preservation of the identity).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Incorruptible Bodies examines a fateful theological controversy that raged in the eastern Roman empire in the early sixth-century. The controversy, whose main participants were the anti-Chalcedonian leaders Severus of Antioch and Julian of Halicarnassus, centered on whether or not Jesus' body was corruptible prior to its resurrection from the dead. Viewing the controversy in light of late antiquity's multiple images of the 'body of Christ,' Yonatan Moss reveals the underlying political, ritual, and cultural stakes of this debate and its long-lasting effects"--Provided by publishe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the triumphant proclamation of Jesus as God in the Fourth Gospel stands a history of alienation, intense conflict, and crisis. Jerome Neyrey unearths that history by showing how the Gospel's Christology functions as a cipher for the Johannine community's estrangement -- and eventual revolt -- from its roots in the synagogue. In Part One, Neyrey offers a fresh, full exegesis of the controversies over Jesus's eschatological and divine powers, which underlay the Gospel's confession of Jesus as equal to God. Part Two deftly employs social-science modeling for a rigorous and enlightening reconstruction of the worldview of John's community as it evolved through stages of controversy that propelled Christians into an exaltation of Christ and a radical devaluation of this world -- an ideology of revolt. A paradigm of interdisciplinary biblical research, An Ideology of Revolt discloses the irony and scandal of John's community and of John's Christ.

This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the narrative function of the Old Testament characters in the Gospel of John. The fascinating thesis is that the Hebrew characters in John's narrative uniformly function as a witness for the messianic identity of Jesus. The Jewish scriptural traditions (Hebrew and intertestamental ones) are compared to shed light on John's indebtedness for its formation of his Christology. A compelling argument ensues, which informs our understanding, not only of the Gospel itself, but also of Jesus Christ revealed in the Gospel. COMMENDATION "Dr Ahn's thorough and careful study represents a solid contribution, from which many will benefit. All serious interpreters of the Johannine witness will want to refer to this work." - Mark A. Seifrid, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, USA
