Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions When I was a student in college, a venerated missionary of the American Boardfi distin guished alike for his wisdom and piety and successful service, visiting Amherst, and relating some results of his thirty years' observations on missionary ground, told us, among other things, that we, having always lived in a Christian land, could have little conception of the vices and the degradation of the heathen. Though I hardly understood the remark at the time, and never felt its force until my own recent observation gave me some opportunity of testing its truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Christian Missions For years the author had been conducting a brief study of Christian missions, using such text-books as had been available. He had given lectures supplementary to the text-books he at the time was using. His lectures had grown in volume, till he found little time for interlocutory study with the class after delivering them. These lec tures had all along been informed by a unifying principle - the relation of the mental grasp of the Christian system to mission work. He had been asked repeatedly to publish them. Two years ago he began to rewrite those bearing on world-wide missions, as opportunity was given; and now offers these to the Christian public, and particularly to the ministers, elders, deacons and brotherhood-workers of his own communion. It will be found that they constitute an attempt at a philosophy of missions; and, it is hoped, that they contain a relatively small amount of unessential detail. It has been a constant aim, at any rate, to burden the memory only with the essential facts; but to stir the thought. In a word, the aim has been to introduce to the proper study of missions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christian Missions The story of missions, which reaches back to the beginning of the Christian era, and embraces almost every country in the world, cannot be told within the limits of a single volume. The task which I have ventured to undertake is of a far less ambitious character, my object being to provide the intelligent reader with an outline sketch of Christian missions which may enable him to obtain a correct perspective, but which will need to be filled in for each several country and period of history by much careful study. This volume is not intended to serve as a diction ary nor as a commentary upon missions, but as a text-book to encourage and facilitate their study. Those who have devoted the largest amount of time to such study will be most ready to forgive its imperfections and shortcomings. A well-known authority on the subject of Foreign Missions, to whom the task of writing this book was originally assigned, but who failed to respond to the invitation, wrote to its present author, You have an almost impossible task; I should absolutely quail at the work you are doing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Christian Missions In its origin and history, Christianity stands dis tinguished from all the ethnic religions, or religions of some particular nation or race. Many religions have had their home exclusively within single races or peoples, making no effort, and showing no abil ity, to go farther in the world. Such were the religions of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Scandi navia: such also is Hinduism, which is the religion of India alone; and reveals no missionary feeling toward mankind. Such is the religion Of China, which goes beyond its native realm only to influ ence kindred peoples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decisive Hour of Christian Missions The World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in June of the present year constituted in its plan, in its personnel, in the spirit which characterized it, and in its promise, the most significant gathering ever held in the interest of the world's evangelization. In preparation for the Conference eight representative international Commissions has been at work for over eighteen months making a scientific investigation and study of some of the most pressing and vital problems of Christian missions. Associated with these Commissions as correspondents were the principal missionaries and leaders of the Church on the mission fields, as well as many of the foremost thinkers and workers of the missionary forces at home. The reports resulting from these special investigations have afforded a very comprehensive presentation of the facts about the main aspects of the missionary situation. Those who have had opportunity to examine the mass of evidence gathered by the Commissions and to listen to the discussions of the reports at the Edinburgh Conference must have been impressed with the fact that the present is the decisive hour of Christian missions. In the history of Christianity there has never been such a remarkable conjunction of opportunities and crises on all the principal mission fields and of favoring circumstances and possibilities on the home field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Enterprise: A Collection of Discourses on Christian Missions The preparation of this volume was undertaken at the suggestion of others, whose opinions, ever entitled to respect, seemed to present a demand for service, which the Editor did not consider himself as at liberty to disregard. This claim he was the more happy to honor, as it afforded an opportunity, through the medium of secular enterprise, to promote an interest which he has long regarded as of primary and paramount importance. Whatever may be the measure of profit from the pecuniary investment, the hope is fondly cherished, both by the Publishers and the Editor, that large benefits, of a much higher order, will accrue to that noble Cause which it is especially intended to advance. The task of selection has been, in some instances, peculiarly difficult. Several discourses, of great excellence, have been omitted, which, perhaps, would have been included, had not circumstances appeared to encourage the expectation, that a second series might be demanded. Should this volume be favorably received, another may succeed, comprising not only sermons, but a rich variety of addresses, essays, and eloquent appeals, all pertaining to the same great subject - Christian Missions. Many of this class of productions are too valuable to be left scattered in ephemeral forms, and should be gathered up, and added to the increasing stock of our Missionary literature, and thus made to extend and perpetuate their salutary efficiency. Corrections and additions have been made, by some of the authors, with special reference to this publication. Marginal notes and references, not necessary to be retained, have been omitted; and, in a few instances, the text has been slightly abridged. In pleading the cause of Missions in various parts of England, I was struck with the large number of persons who felt greatly interested in the progress of Christianity in India, who knew comparatively little, in a definite form, of the country as a field for missions, yet who were quite prepared eagerly to accept of all the information that could be given them. It is for such that this volume is designed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
