Book excerpt: "CHASING THE ELEPHANT INTO THE BUSH" is an insider's account of how the governing New Patriotic Party lost power in the closest elections in Africa's history. The writer believes that providing an accurate account will begin the process of correcting the rumours, lies and myths that are out there about the 2008 elections in Ghana. Throughout, the book is liberally sprinkled with quotes and historical references that makes it very informative and interesting. He begins with the state of the nation and the governing party as Ghana approached 2008. He then takes the reader through the NPP primary and his own experiences as a losing candidate. There is candid discussion of the rivalries in the campaign that undermined its effectiveness. He takes the reader inside meetings and quotes some of the key players at key moments in the campaign. There is candid discussion of the roles of the media, the security forces and civil society. The identification of issues and their use in the campaign is discussed thoroughly. While his sympathies are never in doubt, he is very objective and acknowledges the mistakes made by the campaign, the government and the party. He credits the NDC Campaign for doing certain things well. Amongst these are the deployment of President Mills and former President Rawlings as well as Vice-President John Mahama. He reveals the roles of key people, including the President, the Presidential candidate and powerful groups, like the "Kyebi Mafia". He offers candid assessments of all the key players. He suggests reasons for the NPP defeat and the way to recapture power. This will be a very significant first cut and reference point for an account of the 2008 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in Ghana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DISCLAIMER: The views expressed in this book are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the New Patriotic Party. Ghana faces socio-economic problems that require solutions by experienced and committed leadership, not inexperienced and uncommitted leadership. This book is a brief socio-economic analysis of Ghana and a lesson for the NPP as to why it was chased into the bush in 2008, and to serve as a guide in the return of the elephant into the city in 2016. The contract with Ghana is an implied adherence and commitment to certain systematic public policies aimed at quickening the pace of Ghanas socio-economic development for which a political party is elected into office to prosecute. The NDC government has neglected this contract, and the NPP has to revive and prosecute it for the well-being of Ghanaians. The Supreme Court petition of 2012 itself constituted an exonerative trial of the NDC governments narrative about the temperament, character, and disposition of the NPP presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo. The fact that the NDC government is presiding over unprecedented corruption scandals and financial indiscipline has tuned in voters deep desire for change. This book serves as an intervention to help avoid election violence.

Galileo & The Art of Ageing Mindfully reveals how the father of modern science introduced a new era in our mindful understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe. Adam Ford turns his telescope towards the stars to reveal a natural fusion of science and spirituality and to offer his own perspective on ageing. Questions of deep time and existence, and spiritual insights are shared alongside wise notes to his grandchildren. Add in a constellation of meditative insights, and Adam proves how our existential journey with ageing is the natural opportunity to experience the true benefits of mindfulness.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays to focuses on the critical issue of corruption that lies at the heart of the crisis of constitutionalism in Africa. Most anti-corruption measures over the years have been inadequate, serving merely as symbolic gestures to give the impression something is being done. The African Union's declaration of 2018 as the 'African anti-corruption year', belated though it be, is an open recognition by African governments of the impact corruption will have on the continent unless urgent steps are taken. The key objective of this volume is to draw attention to the problem of corruption, the complexity of the situation, with all its multi-faceted social, political, economic and legal dimensions, and the need for remedial action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite Ghana's strong democratic track record in recent decades, the economy remains underdeveloped. Industrial policies are necessary to transform the colonial trading economy that Ghana inherited at independence, but successive governments have been unwilling or unable to implement them. In this highly original interpretation, supported by new empirical material, Lindsay Whitfield exposes the reasons for why the Ghanaian economy remains underdeveloped and sets her theory in the wider African context. She offers a new way of thinking about the political economy of Africa that charts a clear path away from defining Africa in terms of neopatrimonial politics and that provides new conceptual tools for addressing what kind of business-state relations are necessary to drive economic development. As a study of Ghana that addresses both the economy and politics from early colonialism to the present day, this is a must-read for any student or scholar interested in the political economy of development in Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of African economic development frequently focus on the daunting challenges the continent faces. From recurrent crises to ethnic conflicts and long-standing corruption, a raft of deep-rooted problems has led many to regard the continent as facing many hurdles to raise living standards. Yet Africa has made considerable progress in the past decade, with a GDP growth rate exceeding five percent in some regions. The African Successes series looks at recent improvements in living standards and other measures of development in many African countries with an eye toward identifying what shaped them and the extent to which lessons learned are transferable and can guide policy in other nations and at the international level. The first volume in the series, African Successes: Governments and Institutions considers the role governments and institutions have played in recent developments and identifies the factors that enable economists to predict the way institutions will function.
