Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celia Smith Hill’s journal provides a glimpse of hardscrabble life in far West Texas during the first half of the twentieth century. Hill’s family moved to Texas from Tennessee in the late 1800s. After her death, Bill Wright and Marianne Wood researched the history of the area and interviewed family and friends to provide context for Hill’s colorful tale of endurance in an unforgiving landscape. Hill’s family suffered lean times during the Depression before cinnabar—mercury ore—was discovered on her family’s property. During World War II, the Fresno Mines supplied one tenth of all the mercury produced in the United States. After graduating college, Celia began a peripatetic teaching career that lasted decades, marrying and losing two husbands along the way. Finally, living alone along the most remote western border of Texas, Celia spent her later years selling snacks to the occasional visitor. Bill Wright met Celia at her La Junta General Store in Ruidosa, where she told him about her unfinished journal. With this book Bill fulfills his promise to share her courageous and fascinating life with others.

Book excerpt: The enthralling, true tale of a celebrated “coffin ship” that ran between Ireland and America in the 1840s: “By turns harrowing and heartwarming…All Standing salvages the treasure of a history lost at sea” (J.C. Hallman, author of The Devil Is a Gentleman). More than one million immigrants fled the Irish famine for North America—and more than one hundred thousand of them perished aboard the “coffin ships” that crossed the Atlantic. But one small ship never lost a passenger. All Standing recounts the remarkable tale of the Jeanie Johnston and her ingenious crew, whose eleven voyages are the stuff of legend. Why did these individuals succeed while so many others failed? And what new lives in America were the ship’s passengers seeking? In this deeply researched and powerfully told story, acclaimed author Kathryn Miles re-creates life aboard this amazing vessel, richly depicting the bravery and defiance of its shipwright, captain, and doctor—and one Irish family’s search for the American dream.

Book excerpt: Beautiful, yet mysterious and deadly, Pilar Rivera is forced into a life of kill or be killed. She has killer good looks and knows how to use them as she stalks and shoots the man who raped her in Havana when she was 16 – and becomes entwined in the crime of the ages. Rumored to be Ernest Hemingway’s Cuban daughter, Pilar is a female Jason Bourne, a woman without a country, loyal only to herself, who will kill for money but charges nothing for revenge. It’s an amazing tale of sex, murder and intrigue, set in the turbulent times of the Cold War, as it moves from Cuba to Russia, New York to Paris, Miami to New Orleans then on to Dallas that notorious day in November. The story swirls around two larger-than-life figures of the 20th century – John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro – along with a parade of iconic personalities: Jackie and Bobby, Marilyn and Sinatra, Che and Raul, Oswald and Ruby, the rat pack, the mob, the CIA and Hemingway. It’s a fast-paced thriller, as told by Jack Ruby, the last man standing, the only person involved still alive – except for the girl who shot JFK.
