Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is volume 11 of The forms of the Old Testament literature, a 24-volume series that aims to present a form-critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible). In his introduction De Vries sketches the canonical setting of the books of Chronicles, especially their relation with Ezra-Nehemiah, and then discusses the redacted and original versions of Chronicles. He describes Chronicles as genealogical and narrative history that tells who ideal Israel is, how it has suffered by its unfaithfulness, and how it will remain true Israel by trusting in God. Following the series format throughout his work, De Vries offers an analysis of the structure, genre, setting, and intention of each section of the biblical text. Bibliographies guide the reader to further discussion; a glossary of formulas and genres concludes the volume. - Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-part commentary argues that Chronicles, placed as it is among the 'historical books' in the traditional Old Testament of the Christian church, is much misunderstood. Restored to its proper position as the final book in the canon as arranged in the order of the Hebrew Bible, it is rather to be understood as a work of theology essentially directed towards the future. The Chronicler begins his work with the problem facing the whole human race in Adam-the forfeiture of the ideal of perfect oneness with God's purpose. He explores the possibility of the restoration of that ideal through Israel's place at the centre of the world of the nations. This portrayal reaches its climax in an idealized presentation of the reign of Solomon, in which all the rulers of the earth, including most famously the Queen of Sheba, bring their tribute in acknowledgment of Israel's status (Volume 1). As subsequent history only too clearly shows, however, the Chronicler argues (Volume 2), that Israel itself, through unfaithfulness to Torah, has forfeited its right to possession of its land and is cast adrift among these same nations of the world. But the Chronicler's message is one of hope. By a radical transformation of the chronology of Israel's past into theological terms, the generation whom the Chronicler addresses becomes the fiftieth since Adam. It is the generation to whom the jubilee of return to the land through a perfectly enabled obedience to Torah, and thus the restoration of the primal ideal of the human race, is announced.

Book excerpt: The Chronicler wrote as a pastoral theologian. The congregation he addressed was an Israel separated from its former days of blessing by a season of judgment. The books of 1 and 2 Chronicles bring a divine word of healing and reaffirm the hope of restoration to a nation that needed to regain its footing in God's promises and to reshape its life before God. The Chronicler expounds the Bible as he knows it, skillfully weaving his commentary into the linear text of Israel's history. His theme is straightforward--the promises of God revealed in the Davidic covenant are as trustworthy and as effective as the God who first uttered them. In two volumes Martin Selman provides an excellent interpretation of these sorely neglected yet profound books of the Old Testament. This volume on 2 Chronicles continues to build on the groundwork laid by its companion in 1 Chronicles. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series.
