Book excerpt: The candid, never-before-heard history of the past 40 years of USC Trojans Football—whose storied alumni include O.J.Simpson, Reggie Bush, Keyshawn Johnson, and more—as told by the players and coaches who survived it “The untold story behind USC’s success on the field and the scandal off it, from those who lived it day after day.”—Armen Keteyian, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Tiger Woods and correspondent for 60 Minutes Sports Over the years, USC has produced an almost unrivaled level of success: 11 national titles, 38 conference championships, 7 Heisman Trophy winners and 80 All-Americans, while also grooming countless NFL stars. From Todd Marinovich and Keyshawn Johnson to Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart, some of the greatest and most memorable college football players of all time have suited up for the Trojans. And under the leadership of legendary coaches like John Robinson and Pete Carroll, they’ve played in some of college football’s most celebrated big games. At the same time, few big-time football programs are as tumultuous as USC. From battles with the NCAA to bitter internal conflicts between coaches, players, and administration and all-out brawls with hated rivals like Notre Dame, the Trojans’ dominance has often gone hand in hand with controversy. In Cardinal and Gold, respected journalist Steve Delsohn tells the full and unvarnished story of the USC program at its best and worst. From the dynastic “Tailback U” years of the 1970s, to the dominance of the Carroll years, right through the upheaval of the modern era, Cardinal and Gold is a must-read for any fan of USC or major college football.

Book excerpt: From respected journalist Steve Delsohn comes the true story of the University of Southern California football program, told by those who know it best--USC players, coaches, administrators, and leading sports journalists who have covered the fabled team. Over the years, USC has produced an almost unrivaled level of success: 11 national titles, 38 conference championships, 7 Heisman Trophy winners and 80 All-Americans, while also grooming countless NFL stars. From Todd Marinovich and Keyshawn Johnson to Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart, some of the greatest and most memorable college football players of all time have suited up for the Trojans. And under the leadership of legendary coaches like John Robinson and Pete Carroll, they've played in some of college football's most celebrated big games. At the same time, few big-time football programs are as tumultuous as USC. From battles with the NCAA, to bitter internal conflicts between coaches, players, and administrators, to all-out brawls with hated rivals like Notre Dame, the Trojans' dominance has often gone hand in hand with controversy. This book tells, for the first time, the full and unvarnished story of the USC program at its best and worst. From the dynastic "Tailback U" years of the 1970s, to the dominance of the Carroll years, right through the upheaval of the modern era, it's crammed with behind-the-scenes insight into USC's most iconic moments, players, coaches, and games.--Adapted from dust jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Niccolò Ridolfi (1501–50), was a Florentine cardinal, nephew and cousin to the Medici popes Leo X and Clement VII, and he owed his status and wealth to their patronage. He remained actively engaged in Florentine politics, above all during the years of crisis that saw the Florentine state change from republic to duchy. A widely respected patron and scholar throughout his life, his sudden death during the conclave of 1549–50 led to allegations of poison that an autopsy appears to confirm. This book examines Cardinal Ridolfi and his court in order to understand the extent to which cardinalate courts played a key part in Rome’s resurgence and acted as hubs of knowledge located on the fault lines of politics and reform in church and state, hospitable spaces that can be analysed in the context of entanglements in Florentine and Roman cultural and political patronage, and intersections between the princely court and a more professional and complex knowledge and practice of household management in the consumer and service economy of early modern Rome. Based on an array of archival sources and on three treatises whose authors were closely linked to Ridolfi’s court, this monograph explores these multidisciplinary intersections to allow the more traditional fields of church and political history to be approached from different angles. Niccolò Ridolfi and the Cardinal's Court will appeal to all those interested in the organisation of these elite establishments and their place in sixteenth-century Roman society, the life and patronage of Niccolò Ridolfi in the context of the Florentine exiles who desired a return to republicanism, and the history of the Roman Catholic Church.
